GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After getting off to an impressive start in the field events, the Alabama track and field team closed the Florida Relays with an impressive showing in the relay events.
"We had some amazing performances this weekend and we finished really well today," UA head coach Dan Waters said. "That 4x400-meter relay was so fast and just a hair off the school record and as good as we were in the 4x100 relay, we still have room to faster as we go along. To have two 4x100s run like that really says a lot about our depth in the sprints. We had some great efforts in a lot of events all over the track. Now we just have to continue to work to get better as we go along."
The Tide closed out the weekend with a third-place showing in the women's Tom Jones College 4x400-meter relay race, where junior Takyera Roberson, junior Mauricia Prieto, sophomore Tamara Clark and junior Natassha McDonald came together to post a 3:28.60, the second fastest time in school history and just .04 of a second off the school record. The current school mark of 3:28.56 was set in 1987 by Sandra Latham and Olympians Flora Hyacinth, Pauline Davis and Lillie Leatherwood. Â
Sophomore Daija Lampkin along with juniors Symone Darius and D'Jai Baker and senior Krystal Sparling combined for a scorching 1:31.80 in the 4x200-meter relay to take first among collegiate squads and second overall. The Tide's time was more than a second better than the nearest collegiate quartet.
Alabama put two squads in the top 10 of the women's 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of Lampkin, Sparling, Prieto and Clark, took sixth overall and third among collegiate squads with a time of 43.65. Sophomore Demi Washington, Darius, Baker and Roberson took ninth overall and sixth among collegians, with a time of 44.16. Both times rank among the nation's best to this point in the season.
In the field events, the Crimson Tide put three throwers in the top 10 of the women's shot put college invite, led by senior Portious Warren's second-place toss of 57-02.25 (17.43m). Senior Haley Teel was fourth with a 56-02.50 (17.13m), while sophomore Nickolette Dunbar was seventh at 53-00.00 (16.15m).
Senior Kord Ferguson medaled in a pair of events, taking second in the shot put college invite with a best effort of 63-09.50 (19.44m) and third in the college discus invite with a best throw of 190-05 (58.04m). Freshman Chago Basso also posted a top-10 finish in the shot put with a 59-06.75 (18.15m).
Senior Will Herrscher took second in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 17-05.50 (5.32m).
Junior Tamara Moncrieffe closed out the field events for the Tide, taking ninth among collegians and 11th overall in the triple jump with a best leap of 41-01.75 (12.54m).
