Crimson Tide finishes in 14th overall in three day, 54-hole event
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Alabama sophomore Angelica Moresco carded a third consecutive round of 1-under par 70 and finished tied for second overall to highlight the final round of the 2019 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. As a team, the Crimson Tide finished in 14th place overall with a three-day total of 899 (309-292-298).
Moresco ended play with a 3-under par 210 – the second-lowest 54-hole tournament total in her two-year Alabama career. She finished play tied for second-best among all golfers on par 3 scoring (2.92, -1) and was fourth-lowest on par 4 holes (3.94, -2). She and Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho (69-68-73) finished six strokes back of individual medalist Frida Kinhult of Florida State (68-68-68/204).
"This was a great tournament for Angi," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "It's terrific to shoot a 3-under on a great golf course that is very demanding. It's great that she tied for second, especially since she has been dealing with a hand injury all winter, so to see her get some confidence and get back on track was awesome."
Junior Jiwon Jeon had the Tide's lowest round of Sunday's 18 holes, finishing with a 3-under par 68. Her and Kinhult were the only golfers in the entire field to card a sub-70 round on the day. As a result, Jeon vaulted 33 positions – the largest jump by any individual on the day – into a 16th-place tie with a 54-hole total of 5-over par 218 (76-74-68).
Junior Kenzie Wright, whose second round of 4-under 67 remained the best individual round by any golfer in the 17-team field, tied for 36th overall with a 223 (78-67-78) on the par 71, 6,266-yard Long Cove Club.
"Kenzie shot 67 (Saturday), which was the lowest round of the tournament, and Jiwon shot 68 today and that was the lowest round of the day, so our three girls who really have to play well for us in order for us to be competitive are starting to get into form. It's been tough conditions for us trying to prepare in terms of the rain, cold weather. For us to play in good weather and get some golf in on a good golf course is just really helpful right now."
Moresco, Jeon and Wright each recorded nine birdies throughout the 54-hole event, which placed them in a tie for fifth-best in the field.
Freshmen Mary Mac Trammell (85-81-82) and Carolina Caminoli (85-83-87) rounded out the Tide golfers with a 248 and 255, respectively.
Florida State, ranked No. 19 entering this weekend's tournament, shot an impressive 2-under par 850 and was the only team to finish below par on its way to claiming the team title. The Seminoles finished 17 strokes better tournament co-runners-up No. 13 Wake Forest (867) and tournament host and 10th-ranked South Carolina (867). Third-ranked Duke (869) finished fourth, followed by No. 7 Vanderbilt (882) and No. 11 Auburn (882), who tied for fifth overall.
The Crimson Tide will return to action on March 23-25 when it competes at the Evans Darby Experience, which will be hosted by Auburn University at the Auburn University Golf Club.
