Alabama Swimmers Off to Strong Start at Auburn Invitational

The Crimson Tide finished first or second, and in many cases both, in each individual event Friday evening
AUBURN, Ala. – Alabama swimming and diving closed out day one of the Auburn Invitational with a one-two-three sweep of the men's 50 freestyle in the James E. Martin Aquatic Center Friday evening.
Freshman Jonathan Berneburg picked up the win with a 19.69, while sophomore Jack Blake was a fraction behind at 19.70. Freshman Colton Stogner added a 20.11 to take third place.
Overall, Alabama finished first or second in every individual event on the day, including three events where they took both places.
Junior Cameron Brown got the night started by winning the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.42.
Alabama went one-two in the women's 200 individual medley, with freshman Catherine Wright posting a 2:00.96 for the win and sophomore Mallory Underwood going 2:02.58 for second place. The Crimson Tide also went one-two in the women's 50 freestyle with junior Allie Surrency going 22.80 and senior Caroline Beene clocking a 22.87.
After posting a 4:23.34 in prelims, freshman Ryan Ratliff took second in the men's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:24.90, just .06 off the winning time. Senior Evan Heldman was fourth with a 4:26.93, while sophomore Christian Strycker was fifth at 4:27.11 in the 500.
Freshman John Shelstad was second in the men's 200 individual medley with a time of 1:47.66, while sophomore Andrey Tretyakov was fifth after stopping the clock at 1:50.08.
The Crimson Tide returns to action Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT for day two prelims.
