The Crimson Tide’s total ranks second in the league and first among teams that don’t sponsor men’s soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama placed 90 student-athletes on the 2018 Fall Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the conference office announced Thursday. The Crimson Tide is one of just three schools to have 80 or more student-athletes earn the honor, ranking second overall and first among teams that don't sponsor men's soccer.
A total of 34 members of Alabama's SEC champion football team earned a place on the honor roll. Among those earning the academic accolade are All-Americans Ross Pierschbacher and Jonah Williams, CoSIDA Academic All-American Keaton Anderson and CoSIDA All-District honoree Jedrick Wills Jr. The Tide's total is third among the 14 SEC football squads.
The Crimson Tide led the way among men's cross country squads with 11, a total which included All-Americans Alfred Chelanga and Vincent Kiprop, while women's cross country tallied 16 honors, giving the Tide a combined total of 27, which is second in the SEC.
The soccer team put 19 players on the list, standing third in the league, including CoSIDA Academic All-American Emma Welch. There were 10 from the Tide's volleyball team, ranking Alabama fourth among SEC squads.
To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on the 2017 spring, summer and fall terms.
Any student-athlete who participates in an SEC championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution's NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll.
The conference will release a winter and spring honor roll in the months to come and recognizes its first-year student-athletes based on grades from the fall and spring semester with an honor roll that is released in June.
