The Crimson Tide men and women both earned the USTFCCCA’s NCAA Division I All-Academic Award in 2018
NEW ORLEANS – The Alabama men's and women's cross country teams both earned NCAA Division I All-Academic honors the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced this week.
In addition to earning the coaches association honor, the Crimson Tide women ranked second among NCAA Division I schools and first in the Southeastern Conference in team grade point average. This year's honor marks the fifth year in a row and 13th time overall that the UA women have earned the team honor. Alabama's men, fifth in the SEC in team GPA, have earned All-Academic as a team the last five years in a row and 16 times overall.
"We are extremely proud of the job our men and women did in the classroom this fall," UA head coach Dan Waters said. "As a program, we want each student-athlete to strive for excellence in every area of their collegiate experience and this honor is evidence of that philosophy at work."
Alabama's men were led by senior Alfred Chelanga, who earned All-America honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and Dean's List (3.5-or-better GPA) honors in the classroom during the fall semester. Sophomore Maddie Dearborn, who was among the Tide's scoring five at the SEC and NCAA South Regional Championships and earned President's List (4.0 GPA) honors in the fall, was at the forefront for the UA women both athletically and academically.
