Former Alabama players continue to excel on both sides of the football
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The ninth week of the 2019 season in the National Football League wrapped up on Monday. Below is a look at some of the highlights from former Crimson Tide players currently in the NFL.
Week nine featured dominant performances from former Alabama defensive backs and running backs. The play on defense was highlighted by Minkah Fitzpatrick, Marlon Humphrey and Eddie Jackson. Joining the trio was Dont'a Hightower, who excelled once again for the New England Patriots.
Fitzpatrick was key once again for the Steelers, recording seven tackles and an interception with a 96-yard return for a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 26-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts. The pick was his fourth of the season, tying him for second in the league. Humphrey also continued his string of strong performances for Baltimore. Humphrey recorded six tackles to go with a fumble return for a 70-yard touchdown as the Ravens took down the undefeated New England Patriots, 37-20, on Sunday Night Football.
Jackson joined the duo of Fitzpatrick and Humphrey with a big defensive performance for the Bears. The Chicago safety collected 10 tackles on the day. Former Tide linebacker Dont'a Hightower also posted big numbers for the New England Patriots. Hightower recorded a team-high 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss.
The rushing group featured four former runners, including both of the Crimson Tide's Heisman Trophy winners. Posting big weeks for their respective teams were Josh Jacobs, Kenyan Drake, Derrick Henry and Mark Ingram. Jacobs, just days away from being named Offensive Rookie of the Month in October, provided a solid performance on Sunday for the Oakland Raiders. The first-year back rushed 28 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Joining Jacobs was Drake, who was acquired a week prior by Arizona. The newcomer to the Cardinals roster carried the ball 15 times for 110 yards and added a touchdown while catching four passes for 52 yards on Thursday Night Football. Henry contributed 13 carries for 63 yards and a score while adding three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Tennessee Titans' Sunday matchup. Ingram, returning from a bye, showed off his fresh legs with 15 carries for an impressive 115 yards. He also added two receptions for 29 yards as the Ravens knocked the Patriots from the ranks of the unbeaten teams.
