Alabama Women’s Basketball Opens 2019-20 Campaign Hosting Hampton on Wednesday

The Crimson Tide will play the Lady Pirates in Coleman Coliseum at 7 p.m. CT
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team officially begins its 2019-20 campaign with its season opener against Hampton on 7 p.m. CT inside Coleman Coliseum.
This is the third meeting between the two schools, with Alabama holding the 2-0 all-time advantage. The last time the two teams met was on Nov. 22, 2008, when UA won, 69-60. The only other time the programs played, Alabama won in Tuscaloosa in overtime, 63-60, on Dec. 20, 2007.

• Wednesday's game is the annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger contest. Fans that bring in one canned item will receive a complimentary ticket. All items go to help the West Alabama Food Bank.

• The season opener will be streamed live on SEC Network+ via the WatchESPN app. Eli Gold (play-by-play) and Rick Moody (analyst) will be on the call and will be joined by sideline reporter Addie Weaver.

Opening Tip
• Under head coach Kristy Curry, Alabama is 5-1 in season openers, including winning its last five openers by an average margin of 39 points. At UA, Curry is 5-0 in openers at home.
• In its lone exhibition of the season, the Crimson Tide came out with the 89-point victory over Auburn-Montgomery, 105-16, on Oct. 27. Alabama was led by sophomore Brittany Davis' game-high 19 points.
The Difference a Year Makes
• The 2019-20 Alabama roster returns 11 players from last year's team, which is tied for first with Kentucky for the most in the SEC. Last year, the Tide was the 11th-youngest team in the nation entering the 2018-19 season.
• UA has four of five starters returning, along with Jordan Lewis, Shelby Gibson and Amber Richardson who redshirted a season ago. The Tide also returns 84.4 percent of its scoring from last year.
• Alabama has nine of its top 10 scorers coming back from last season including four of five starters, which includes senior Cierra Johnson, sophomore Megan Abrams, junior Jasmine Walker and junior Ariyah Copeland.
About Hampton
• The Lady Pirates went 16-14 in 2018-19 including 12-6 in their first year in the Big South Conference.
• Head Coach Davis Six is entering his 11th season at the helm. He is the program's all-time winningest coach with 214 career wins at HU.
• Hampton also returns a lot of experience with nine players coming back from its 2018-19 roster, including senior Ashley Bates who was named the Big South Player of the Year and the Big South Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 17.4 points per game last year, which was tops in the conference.
Johnson Named Preseason Second Team All-SEC
• Johnson was voted to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team by the Southeastern Conference coaches on Oct. 26.
• She is the first Crimson Tide player since Ericka Russell in 2011 to be named to a SEC Preseason Team. Last season, Johnson scored 457 points on the season which is the most by an Alabama player since 2010-11 and became the second player to score 450-plus points since the 1999-00 season.
