Alabama Opens 2019 Indoor Track & Field Season at UAB Blazer Invitational Friday

Junior Shelby McEwen cleared a meet-record in men’s high jump in season-opening meet
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama men's and women's teams got the 2019 indoor track & field season off to a solid start Friday at the UAB Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Overall, the Crimson Tide came away with a pair of wins and meet records to go with them as well as eight top-three finishes on the day.
"It was a good start for us, and the best thing is we have a lot more to come next weekend," UA head coach Dan Waters said. "There were some great performances for us today and we're looking forward to carrying this forward into the season."
Junior Shelby McEwen got the season started with a win in the men's high jump, clearing a meet-record of 7-4.25 (2.24m), bettering his nearest competition by more than three inches.
Alabama also got a win in the women's 300-meter dash, going 1-3-5, led by sophomore Tamara Clark's meet-record 37.01. Sophomore Daija Lampkin (37.35m) and junior Takyera Roberson (38.57m), took third and fifth, respectively.
Senior Portious Warren took third in the women's shot put, launching a throw of 54-9.25 (16.69m) on her next to last effort. Sophomore Nickolette Dunbar and senior Haley Teel took seventh and eighth, respectively. Dunbar threw for 49-7.25 (15.12m), while Teel went 49-6.5 (15.10m). Senior Stacey Destin cleared 5-8.5 (1.74m) in the women's high jump to take third place.
Senior Nicole Gardner was third in the 1,000-meters, crossing the line with a 2:55.55, while sophomore Brittany Tolson took fifth in the mile, clocking a 5:12.08.
In the first throw of his collegiate career, freshman Bobby Colantonio uncorked an effort of 69-4 (21.13m) to take third place in the men's weight throw. Junior Michael Wiggin finished third in the men's triple jump, going 47-7.25 (14.51m) on his next to last jump.
Alabama will return to action next weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational, Jan. 18-19, at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in Nashville, Tenn.
