Alabama Men’s Golf in Fifth After Opening Round of Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational

Davis Riley leads the way on day one with 2-under par 68
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The second-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded a total of 4-over par 284 on Friday and is in fifth place after the opening round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. The Crimson Tide, one of 10 squads in the 15-team field which are ranked in the top-25 entering the event, trails co-leaders No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 11 California, who are tied at 7-under par 273.
Alabama was led by senior Davis Riley, the event's defending individual champion from a year ago, who carded his fourth consecutive below-par round to begin the season with 2-under par 68 on Friday. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native collected five birdies and three bogeys during his opening round and will enter Saturday's second round three strokes back of clubhouse leader Matthew Wolfe of Oklahoma State.
Freshman Frankie Capan III also had a solid opening 18 holes, as he ended the day in a tie for 13th with an even par 70 on the 7,281-yard Olympia Fields North Course layout. Sophomores Davis Shore and Wilson Furr, along with junior Josh Sedeno, all carded a 3-over par 73 and are tied for 31st to round out the Crimson Tide golfers.
Alabama is just a stroke back of No. 23 UNLV and South Carolina, both of which carded a 3-over 283. Tournament-host No. 16 Illinois is in sixth at 5-over par, followed by No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 20 USC, Indiana and No. 11 Stanford to round out the top-10 teams, respectively.
The Crimson Tide will tee off the second round of play on Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. CT off Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside UNLV and Illinois. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
