The Crimson Tide All-American to represent the United States for third time in 2018
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Kristen Gillman will compete for the United States at the 2018 Women's World Amateur Team Championship, Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at Carton House Golf Club in Maynooth, Ireland.
Gillman, who earned her spot on the team with her victory in the U.S. Women's Amateur earlier this month, enters the tournament as the No. 3-ranked amateur player in the world. She is joined on the U.S. team by Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho and UCLA's Lilia Vu. Kupcho and Vu are the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked world amateurs.
The formidable U.S. team will be one of 57 countries competing in this year's tournament, which was last won by South Korea in 2016. Teams will play four rounds of stroke play beginning Wednesday to determine the 2018 champion. The United States will tee off Wednesday at 1:45 a.m. CT (7:45 a.m. Irish Standard Time) and will be paired with South Korea and host Ireland in the first two rounds.
This will be Gillman's third tournament representing the United States this summer. The Austin, Texas, native competed in the Curtis Cup in June in Scarsdale, N.Y., along with UA teammate Lauren Stephenson and was a member of the U.S. team at the Palmer Cup in Evian-les-Baines, France in July. Stephenson and Crimson Tide men's golfer Davis Riley joined Gillman on that team. The U.S. took home championships in both events.
This week's tournament caps a busy summer for Gillman. In addition to her win at the U.S. Amateur, she finished 27th at the U.S. Women's Open at Shoal Creek in June and won the LPGA of Japan's Century 21 Ladies' Tournament in Shiga, Japan in July.
Conducted by the International Golf Federation, which includes the national governing bodies of golf from more than 125 countries, the Women's World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones – Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
Each team plays four days of 18 holes of stroke play. The two lowest scores from each team after each round are counted as the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.
The winning team at the women's World Amateur Team Championship receives the Espirito Santo Trophy. Members of the first-, second- and third-place teams receive gold, silver or bronze medals.
