TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's golfers Lauren Stephenson and Kristen Gillman and men's golfer Davis Riley will open play at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup in Evian, France on Friday morning.
The trio are part of a 24-player United States squad that is competing against a team of international college golfers in this year's event, which will be played July 6-8, at the Evian Resort Golf Club. Alabama assistant women's golf coach Susan Rosenstiel is serving an assistant coach for the U.S. team.
The International squad roster includes 2018 UA women's golf signee Jiwon Jeon. The Daegu, South Korea, native is the first junior college golfer to be selected to participate in the Palmer Cup in the 21-year history of the event. She will join the Tide in the fall from Daytona State (Fla.) College.
The Palmer Cup will open with mixed Four-Ball matches on Friday morning. The teams will return to the course for mixed Foursomes on Saturday morning, followed by traditional Four-Ball matches that afternoon. The Cup will conclude with singles matches on Sunday. Teams receive a point for each individual match victory and a half-point for each halved individual match.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style tournament co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America in 1997. From 1997-2017, the tournament featured teams of men's collegiate golfers representing the United States, Great Britain & Ireland (1997-2002) and Europe (2003-2017).
The 2018 edition of the Arnold Palmer Cup is the first to use the expanded format of United States men's and women's collegiate golfers facing their counterparts from around the world.
