The Crimson Tide will make its third trip of the 2017-18 season to the Volunteer State for the Conference Championships
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Alabama rowing team hits the road for the final time of the season, as it heads to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Big 12 Championships. It will be the Tide's third trip of the 2017-18 season to the Volunteer state, as it competed twice in the fall at the Chattanooga Head Race and the Head of the Hooch also in Chattanooga. Preliminary rounds begin on Saturday, May 12 with event finals taking place on Sunday, May 13.
"Our crews have made good progress over the past two weeks," UA head coach Larry Davis said.
Six Crimson Tide crews will compete in six races, beginning with the First Varsity 8+ at 2 p.m. ET and continuing with the 2V8+ (2:30 p.m.), 1V4+ (3:15 p.m.), 2V4+ (3:45 p.m.), 3V8+ (4:15 p.m.), and a 3V4+ exhibition race (4:30 p.m.) to close out the first day of action. Grand and Petite-level finals in the five championship events will be underway Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.
Alabama's 1V4+ enters the weekend seeded second in the conference, with the 2V4+ and 3V8+ seeded third, followed by the 1V8+ and 2V8+ seeded fifth. Alabama will compete against Texas in the 3V4+ exhibition race, with the Tide seeded second.
Last season, Alabama racked up its highest-ever medal count (three) and team finish (fourth), as all five championship crews competed in Grand Finals. The Tide's 1V4+ and 3V8+ crews took silver, while the 2V4+ took home bronze. Those performances helped position Alabama for a fourth-place finish of 28 points, its highest team finish at a conference championship in program history.
"We're looking forward to this weekend's racing and improving upon last year's record showing," Davis said.
