The Crimson Tide snaps a six-match skid to pick up its first conference win of the season
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Alabama women's tennis team used a strong singles performance to best Missouri, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex in the last road match of the regular season. After dropping the doubles point, the Crimson Tide won four out of five singles matches to snap a six-match skid and pick up its first conference win of the season.
Missouri took the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play after clinching the doubles point. The Tigers won the first doubles match at No. 3, defeating freshman Kylie Moulin and sophomore Kimberley Gintrand, 6-1, and followed with a win on court two, topping sophomores Ann Selim and Alba Cortina-Pou, 6-3.
In singles, Alabama answered back and surged to a 3-1 lead winning a trio of matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. The Crimson Tide's 91st-ranked singles player in the nation, Andie Daniell, handled Serena Nash, 7-5, 6-3, on court one, while senior Smith Hinton took care of business on court two, downing Mizzou's Taylor Gruber, 6-1, 7-5. On court four, Selim recovered from a 4-6 loss in set one and dominated in the remaining sets, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Tide the two-point cushion.
Then, the Tigers stopped Alabama's momentum and cut the lead to one after Mackenz Middlebrooks defeated sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3. However, Cortina-Pou carried the team on her back and iced the match after winning at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4, to remain perfect for the weekend.
The Crimson Tide improves to 14-13 on the season and 1-10 in SEC play, while the Tigers slip to 11-14 and 0-11 in league competition.
Up next, Alabama will conclude its regular season with a pair of matches at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Crimson Tide will face No. 37 LSU on April 13 at 5 p.m. CT, and will wrap up its regular-season slate against No. 33 Texas A&M on April 15 at 1 p.m. CT. Alabama women's tennis will recognize Smith Hinton for Senior Day during the match against the Aggies.
