Crimson Tide take home titles in shot put, high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump Saturday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama track & field teams battled cold, wet conditions on Saturday to turn in a number of winning performances in the field events and sprints on the final day of the 2018 Crimson Tide Invitational at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex in Tuscaloosa.
"Overall, I'm really pleased and thought we competed well," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "With the conditions today, it was hard to get warmed up and get moving like you'd like to but our team did a great job adjusting to the elements."
Leading the way for the Crimson Tide men was junior Kord Ferguson, who won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 63-11 ½ that ranks No. 3 all-time at Alabama. The Ottawa, Kansas, native also had an earlier attempt in the competition of 63-0 ¾ (19.22m) that is the sixth-best in school history. In addition to the shot put win, Ferguson opened the day with a second-place finish in the discus with a toss of 186-7 (56.88m).
Junior All-American Shelby McEwen won the men's high jump in his outdoor debut with Alabama with a clearance of 7-1 ½ (2.17m). Junior Will Herrscher led a Tide sweep of the top three spots in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 16-8 ¾ (5.10m). Freshman Ryan Lipe finished second at 16-4 ¾ (5.00m) and sophomore Henry Barrett was third at 15-5 (4.70m).
On the track, senior Ruebin Walters won the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best equaling time of 13.51, which ranked as the fourth-fastest in the country entering the weekend.
"That was a great throw for Kord in the shot put," Waters added. He set a personal best twice in five attempts today, which is very impressive. Shelby did a great job clearing 7-1 in the high jump. He's cleared a lot higher but in this weather, that's a really great jump."
In women's field events, senior Britainy Smith won the pole vault in the final home appearance of her career on Saturday with a clearance of 12-8 ¼ (3.87m). Freshman Jaimie Robinson won the triple jump in her outdoor collegiate debut in the event with a jump of 40-11 ¾ (12.49m). Senior Filippa Fotopoulou won the long jump with a mark of 19-10 ¼ (6.05m). Junior Kiara Williams finished second at 19-7 ½ (5.98m).
On the track, the quartet of freshmen Daija Lampkin and Tamara Clark and sophomores Symone Darius and Takyera Roberson won both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays for the Crimson Tide. They opened the afternoon with a season-best 43.48 in the 4x100, which is the fifth-fastest time in school history. A few hours later, they closed the meet with a time of 3:38.87 to take the 4x400.
