Andie Daniell upsets the No. 52 singles player in the nation, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to No. 8 South Carolina, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Junior Andie Daniell highlighted singles action by taking down her second ranked opponent of the season in straight sets.
"I'm proud of the way our team competed today," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "We played with a lot of intensity and grit. After losing a tough doubles point, our team rallied back and got their teeth into this match. We certainly put ourselves in a position to take this match. Credit to South Carolina and Jeff Nevolo for a great match. The match was hard-fought both ways. We have a lot to build on from this match and we're eager to get back to work on Monday. We have a lot of opportunities in front of us."
In doubles, the Gamecocks won the first match at No. 1, defeating the sophomore tandem of Ann Selim and Alba Cortina-Pou, 6-1. Then at No. 2, Martins/Horvits clinched the doubles point after topping Daniell and freshman Kylie Moulin, 6-1, for the 1-0 lead.
In singles play, South Carolina's 31st-ranked singles player in the nation topped senior Smith Hinton at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Gamecocks the two-point lead. Soon thereafter, Alabama axed USC's lead to 2-1 after Daniell upset No. 52 Ingrid Gamarra Martins, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1. However, the Gamecocks regained its two-point advantage after taking the match at No. 3 in a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Competition began to heat up on courts four through six as all of the remaining matches went to three sets. Selim and Cortina-Pou were leading 4-1 and 3-2, respectively, at No. 4 and No. 5 in the final set to try and complete the comeback, but USC's Rachel Rohrabacher pulled through for the Gamecocks, winning at No. 6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the match.
Up next, Alabama will hit the road next weekend to face No. 9 Georgia on March 29 and No. 37 Tennessee on March 31.
