TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- After a short three-week break, Alabama rowing is set to host its final home regatta of the spring season Saturday, welcoming Creighton, Jacksonville and Dayton for the Crimson Tide Invitational. The teams will square off on the Black Warrior River beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
"I think the girls are anxious to get back in a racing situation," head coach Larry Davis said. "We're excited to get out and test ourselves against other crews."
The regatta will feature two sets of races, one in the morning followed by another in the afternoon. The Tide and the Blue Jays will kick things off in the First Varsity 8+ at 8 a.m., followed by the 1V8+ crews of Jacksonville and Dayton. At 8:30 a.m., the 2V8+ crews will go head-to-head in similar fashion, along with the 1V4+ at 9:00 a.m. In the Second Varsity 4+, Alabama will race one crew against a pair of Jacksonville crews at 9:30 a.m. The morning session of races will conclude in the 3V8+ with the Dolphins racing one crew against a trio from the Tide.
After a quick break, the teams will return for the afternoon session at 1 p.m. CT following a similar format. Morning race results will determine the afternoon format, with the top-2 crews squaring off in the A Final and the bottom-2 in the B Final.
"The nice thing about this double dual is we get a chance to race a couple of times," Davis said, "and it's a format that's been evolving and is standard, now, in NCAA Division 1 rowing. We're really excited to have enough teams to come down here and it'll be interesting to see how we match up."
Saturday will serve as the team's annual Power of Pink event, which raises awareness of breast cancer research and honors those who have battled the disease. The Tide will also be honoring its 14 seniors in their final home meet:
Charlotte Adkins (Vail, Colo.), Lydia Blount (Dothan, Ala.), Tayla Cabana (Homer, Alaska), Claire Estep (Sumter, S.C.), Leslie Feriozzi (Margate, N.J.), Maggie Gillespie (Longwood, Fla.), Jacqueline Guezille (Studio City, Calif.), Erin Hayes (Atlanta Ga.), Danielle Kem (Huntington, Ind.), Nicole Lane (Johns Creek, Ga.), Anne Lehmann (Loveland, Ohio), Emily Navin (Seattle, Wash.), Shannon Sweatt (Milton, Ga.), Lindsey Taylor (Memphis, Tenn.).
"We're going to miss them," Davis said. "We've had a lot of progress in the four years they've been here and we certainly appreciate what they've done with their leadership and what they've done to help us become a faster, more competitive division-1 team."
Alabama will continue its spring season in two weeks when it travels to Lawrence, Kan., for the Big 12 Double Dual on April 7.
"Rowing against the teams we're going to be rowing against from here on out – if we do our job, will give ourselves the best opportunity to get selected by the NCAA rowing committee," Davis said. "And that's what we want to do. Row our best."
