Alabama Track & Field Travels to Birmingham for Samford Alabama Track Challenge on Friday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama track & field teams will enter 38 student-athletes (12 men, 26 women) and one relay in the Samford Alabama Track Challenge, March 23 in Birmingham, Ala. Field events will get underway at noon CT with track events beginning at 3:55 p.m. CT. All events will be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex.
The meet will be the Tide's only appearance in-state prior to hosting the Crimson Tide Invitational, April 6-7, in Tuscaloosa.
UTSA Invitational Recap
The Alabama track & field teams opened the 2018 outdoor season March 16-17 at the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, Texas with victories in the women's hammer throw, men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, the men's and women's 100 meters and the men's and women's pole vault.
In women's field events, junior Danielle McConnell opened the meet for the Crimson Tide with a victory in the women's hammer throw, posting a mark of 192-1 (58.55m) on her second throw of the competition and senior Britainy Smith won the pole vault with a clearance of 12-9 ½ (3.90m). On the track for the Tide women, sophomore Symone Darius won the women's 100 meters in 11.46 as Alabama took four of the top five spots in the race.
For the Tide men, sophomore Elliott Miller won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in his collegiate debut in the event in a time of 9:53.89 and junior Keitavious Walter won the 100 meters in 10.15. Freshman Jake Spotswood won the pole vault with a clearance of 17-3 ½ (5.27m). Spotswood's mark ranks No. 6 all-time in UA history.
Alabama to Host Crimson Tide Invitational Presented by Beynon Sports, April 6-7
Alabama will compete at home for the only time this season when the Tide hosts the 2018 Crimson Tide Invitational presented by Beynon Sports, April 6-7 at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex.
The two-day meet will feature teams from around the region and nation. The meet will get underway Friday, April 6 with field events at 3:30 p.m. CT. Running events will begin at 8:40 p.m. CT. The CTI will continue on Friday with field events at 9:10 a.m. CT and running events at 11:40 a.m. CT.
