TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama rowing continues its spring season this weekend, racing against SMU, Saturday at 9 a.m. CT, in the second of its three-straight home regattas.
"We're excited to have SMU come here," head coach Larry Davis said. "It's always very competitive, especially with their first boat. We're anxious to go out and have a good home-course performance and do what I believe our team is able to do."
The Crimson Tide and the Mustangs will converge on the Black Warrior River, competing in three total races, one standard 2,000-meter piece and two 1,000-meter pieces. The races will begin with the First Varsity 8+ leading the way, followed by the Second Varsity 8+. After that, the First Varsity 4+ will compete, followed by the Second Varsity 4+ to end the piece. The boats will then go through the same rotation, but on a shorter course, for the final two 1,000-meter races.
"We're looking to make that next step in boat speed and it'll be a good test against SMU to see if we can do that," Davis said.
Alabama will look to carry over the momentum it found last weekend against Eastern Michigan, where the Tide swept the Eagles in 16 separate 1,000-meter pieces to open its spring campaign.
"Hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can have some good racing," Davis said. "We're certainly looking for the opportunity to have the same kind of crowd we had last weekend."
Following this weekend, Alabama will resume competition in three weeks when it hosts the Crimson Tide Invitational on Saturday, March 24. The regatta will feature Creighton, Jacksonville and Dayton and will also serve as the Tide's senior day and its annual Power of Pink event.
