The Crimson Tide was outscored 9-3 in the overtime period
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to No. 19 Georgia, 49-43, inside Coleman Coliseum on Thursday night.
"I don't think you can fault the effort by either team tonight," said head coach Kristy Curry. "It was a great game and we needed a stop there at the end of regulation and couldn't get it. I thought we had the box out, but we will go back and watch that. At the end of the day you have to credit Georgia. I thought they made some plays in overtime and we didn't. That's a tough one to swallow, but I hope everyone understands that we still have a great opportunity."
The Crimson Tide (17-11, 7-8 SEC) forced the Lady Bulldogs (23-5, 11-4 SEC) into a season-high 27 turnovers in the loss.
Senior Ashley Williams fell just one rebound shy of her third consecutive game with a double-double, finishing the contest with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior Hannah Cook ended with eight points and a career-high eight steals. Cook needed just one more steal to tie the school record for the most takeaways in a single game.
The two sides were evenly matched throughout the entirety of the game, as both squads struggled to score in the first half. At the end of 20 minutes, the two teams were deadlocked at 20-20 with the Alabama defense forcing 16 UGA turnovers.
The offensive struggled continued into the second half with neither side taking more than a four-point advantage for the remainder of regulation.
After Georgia took the 36-35 edge with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, Alabama responded with four-straight points from seniors Meoshonti Knight and Quanetria Bolton to give UA the 39-36 lead with 1:37 left to go. UGA fought back by knocking down a jumper to trim the lead to one with 43 seconds remaining.
After sophomore Jordan Lewis went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, Alabama held the 40-38 lead with 16 seconds left in regulation, before Georgia used a putback with 3.2 seconds remaining on the clock to force the game into overtime. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Tide 9-3 in the overtime period to earn the road victory.
The Tide will return to action for its final regular season game on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. CT when they take on No. 24 LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The game will air live on SEC Network+.
