
Former Alabama Women’s Tennis Players Wrap Up Play at Fed Cup

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's tennis alumni Erin Routliffe, Luicelena Perez and Alexa Guarachi concluded action at the 2018 Fed Cup this weekend. Routliffe represented New Zealand in Asia/Oceania Group II, while Perez and Guarachi represented Venezuela and Chile, respectively, in Americas Group I.
In 2017, 95 nations played Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, making it the world's largest annual international team competition in women's sport.
Asia/Oceania Group II: New Zealand
New Zealand finished competition, 3-3, defeating Lebanon, 3-0, while falling to Uzbekistan, 3-0, and wrapped up play topping Pakistan, 3-0, in the Fifth to Eight Play-off.
Routliffe played in two matches and split the pair 1-1. Routliffe fell to Sabina Sharipova of Uzbekistan, 5-7, 1-6, , but bounced back and defeated Ushna Suhail of Pakistan, 6-3, 6-1, to clinch the play-off win.
Americas Group I: Venezuela and Chile
In Pool A, Chile registered a 1-5 record, slipping to Paraguay, 2-1, and Colombia, 3-0. Guarachi competed in three matches, two singles and one doubles, and finished competition 0-3.
In Pool B, Venezuela recorded a 4-5 mark, defeating Guatemala, 3-0, and falling to Argentina, 3-0, and Brazil, 2-1. Perez competed in two doubles matches with teammate Adriana Perez and went 1-1. The pairing topped Melissa Morales/Gabriela Rivera of Guatemala, 6-2, 7-5, but fell to Maria Irigoyen/Stephanie Mariel Petit of Argentina, 6-7(6), 4-6.
Lastly, in the Relegation Play-offs, Chile came out on top over Venezuela, 2-0. Guarachi took care of Aymet Uzcategui, 7-6(3), 6-2, in the first singles match, and her teammate defeated Andrea Gamiz of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch the match.
Perez and Guarachi were scheduled to play each other in doubles, but the match did not happen due to Chile sweeping both singles matches.
Routliffe and Perez were both members of the first Southeastern Conference Championship team at Alabama in 2014, while also being a part of the first team in program history to advance to the NCAA championship quarterfinals (2014).
Guarachi (2010-13) amassed 109 singles victories, which is the most singles wins ever recorded by a player in Alabama history. She also made four appearances at the NCAA Championships with her best finish coming in 2013 in the semifinal round.
