TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama swimming and diving rolls back into action this Friday at home against in-state rival Auburn. The diving portion of the meet gets underway at 2:30 p.m., while swimming starts at 4:30 p.m.
The meet will be held at the Alabama Aquatic Center and admission is free. The first 100 fans through the doors will receive a free Chick-fil-A sandwich. Due to ongoing renovations and construction, entry to the Alabama Aquatic Center is limited to the front doors facing Paul W. Bryant Drive.
Alabama's men are 18th and the Crimson Tide women are 23rd in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)Â TYR top-25 dual meet poll, while the Tiger women are 17th.
The Crimson Tide has shown quite a bit of speed already this season. Senior Robert Howard leads the men's squad with the top times in the Southeastern Conference in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. The Alexander City, Ala., native is ranked second in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 freestyle nationally. Junior Zane Waddell is also ranked in the top-10 nationally and in the SEC in the 50 freestyle.
A race to watch on the men's side of the meet will be the 100 butterfly, where Waddell and Auburn junior Santiago Grassi are ranked fifth and sixth in the SEC, respectively.
Freshman Kensey McMahon leads the women's team on the other end of the distance spectrum. She is ranked No. 1 in the conference in the 1,650 freestyle and second in the 1,000 freestyle. She broke the school record in both events at last month's Georgia Tech Invitational. Freshman Rhyan White and senior Justine Macfarlane come into Friday's meet ranked in the league's top-10 in the backstroke and breaststroke events, respectively. Â
Races to watch on the women's side of the slate include the 500 and 1,000 freestyles, where McMahon will face off against Auburn rookie Emily Hetzer, who stands just behind the Tide freshman in the SEC when it comes to the 1,000 freestyle.
