Alabama Football’s Waddle, Anoma, Mathis and Surtain II Named to SEC All-Freshman Team

First-year quartet has made significant contributions to the top-ranked Crimson Tide’s season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, linebacker Eyabi Anoma, defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis and defensive back Patrick Surtain II were named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Thursday. The team was voted on by the league's 14 head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Waddle, who was named the SEC Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, established himself at receiver and on special teams in his debut campaign with the Crimson Tide. He leads all SEC freshmen in scoring (48 points on eight touchdowns), receptions per game (3.2) and receiving yards per game (61.8). The Houston, Texas native has 41 receptions for 803 yards to average 19.6 yards per catch with seven touchdown receptions. He has also returned 15 punts for 226 yards and one score with his 15.1 yards per return average ranking second in the SEC.
Anoma is a versatile edge rusher who has seen action in 11 games this season and recorded nine tackles, six unassisted stops, two tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry for the Alabama defense.
A powerful lineman who is a valuable member of the UA defensive line rotation, Mathis has appeared in all 13 of the Tide's contests this season, recording 16 tackles and a fumble recovery. He posted a season-high four stops against Arkansas State.
Surtain II has appeared in all 13 games this season and started the last 10 contests in the Tide secondary. He has recorded 33 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry, six pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one interception.
