Emma Welch, Nealy Martin, and Alex Plavin all earned First-team Academic All-District honors
TUSCALOOSA, ALA. – Alabama senior Emma Welch, junior Nealy Martin, and sophomore Alex Plavin were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, as selected by CoSIDA Thursday.
All three student-athletes carry a 4.0 GPA, are Presidential Scholars, and have been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. The first-team Academic All-District honors moves them forward to the All-America ballot.
Welch earned the second all-district honor of her career and was named CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017. The accolades keep pouring in for the McDonough, Ga. native. She was recently named the 2018 SEC Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior co-captain is currently enrolled in the accelerated master's program at the Capstone, where she is pursuing her undergraduate and graduate degree in marketing simultaneously. She finished her collegiate soccer career as one of the Tide's top contributors, after accumulating 23 assists, breaking the program's all-time career assists record.
Martin is studying chemical engineering. On the field, the Birmingham, Ala. native started and played all 19 games this season and accounted for six shutouts. The co-captain scored the lone and game-winning goal against No. 5 Texas A&M, 1-0, on Oct. 18, 2018.
Plavin is on her way to earning a degree in business management. As goalkeeper, she provided a strong presence between the posts for the Tide, registering six shutouts this season, along with limiting the opponent to only one-goal in six matches. In one of the biggest games of the season the Atlanta, Ga. native collected eight saves in a 1-0, shutout victory over No. 5 Texas A&M.
This year's all-district honorees total ties the 2014 record, and is one-player short of breaking the 2003 program record of four players earning the accolade
