The Crimson Tide knocked down 12 three-pointers in the win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team knocked down 12 three-point attempts en route to a 59-47 win over Stetson on Tuesday night inside Coleman Coliseum.
"That was one of those grinders and we were really fortunate to grind it out," head coach Kristy Curry said. "We knew exactly how they were going to play. We knew that they were going to pack it in on us, and we executed our game plan. We were able to control the tempo for the most part and we made enough plays to put ourselves in a position to win."
Senior Shaquera Wade accounted for four of those three-point makes, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Freshman De'Sha Benjamin came up one rebound short of a double-double, tallying 13 points and snatching nine rebounds. Junior Cierra Johnson turned in an all-around performance, scoring 10 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Junior Jasmine Walker pitched in nine points and five rebounds.
Alabama used back-to-back three pointers to jump out to a 6-0 lead with 7:44 in the game's opening period. Both teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the quarter and the Tide led 18-12 after the first.
In what was a low scoring quarter, UA locked down on defense in the second, allowing just six points in the frame. After 20 minutes of action, Alabama took a 30-18 lead into the halftime break.
After a scoring spurt from Stetson cut the Alabama lead to 30-23 with 7:29 in the third, Wade knocked down three straight triples to hold off the Stetson run and give the Tide a 39-31 lead with 4:23 to play in the quarter. As the game entered the final period, UA held a 46-34 lead.
After both teams exchanged baskets for much of the fourth, a 6-0 Hatters run cut the Alabama lead to 53-47 with 2:32 remaining in the contest. The Crimson Tide would hold steady, however, finishing the game on a 6-0 run to secure the 59-47 victory.
In addition to hot shooting from beyond the arc, the Tide made 73 percent (11-of-15) of its free throw attempts as a team. UA was also strong on the glass, outrebounding Stetson 46-35, including 13 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points. The Crimson Tide also assisted on 12 of its 18 made field goals.
The Tide will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when it takes on Tulsa as a part of the Arizona State Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
