
Alabama to Host ITA Southern Regional Championships Beginning Thursday

Six different Crimson Tide players will compete in the Regional Championships
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team is set to host the ITA Southern Regional Championships with the singles qualifying round beginning on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. CT at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The tournament will run all weekend with the singles and doubles final to be played on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
The Crimson Tide will compete with 12 different teams in the tournament including, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Louisiana, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane and UAB.
The qualifying singles round will begin on Thursday and finish up on Friday afternoon, as 49 individuals will be competing for eight spots in the 32-player main draw set to begin on Saturday.
The qualifying singles draw features sophomore Sam Fischer who earned a first-round matchup with Giovani Pasini (UAB) at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
In doubles action, the draw has a total of 35 different pairs including three Alabama duos. Set to start on Friday at 4 p.m., junior Edson Ortiz and sophomore Riccardo Roberto will face Guillermo Agost/Aljaz Kaplja (Jacksonville State).
Sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta and junior Alexey Nesterov come into the tournament as the No. 6 doubles pair and earned a first-round bye. The duo will play against Tom El Safadi/Daniel Janko (UAB) on Saturday at 9 a.m., while Fischer and junior Zhe Zhou have a first-round bye and will await to play either Michael Durham/Alex Rushin (Auburn) or Pearse Dolan/Arthur Libaud (Louisiana) at 9 a.m.
Also on Saturday will be the start of the main draw in singles play with Ortiz ready to matchup against Malik Bhatnagar (LSU), while Zhou will take on Niclas Braun (Mississippi State). Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
Kaukovalta will compete against No. 120 Hamish Stewart (Tulane), while Roberto is set to play against Rafael Wagner (LSU) and Nesterov is matched up with No. 103 Tyler Schick (Tulane). All three matches will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
A live stream (Courts 1-6 at the Alabama Tennis Stadium) will be available throughout the tournament.
