"The process is more important than the product"
That was the central message that Inquoris "Inky" Johnson brought to an all-sport seminar hosted by Alabama Athletics' Life Skills program on the Crimson Tide campus over the weekend.
Johnson is a former Tennessee football player whose career was cut short by an injury that left his right arm paralyzed and left him in daily pain and with constant physical challenges. While the injury ended his dream of playing professional sports, it revealed an inspirational and motivating spirit. After earning a master's degree in sports psychology from Tennessee, Johnson devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth.
His Alabama program centered on encouraging Tide student-athletes to live in the moment and to never forget their why.
"People don't burn out because of what they do, but because life makes them forget why they do it," Johnson told the group of more than 400 student-athletes.
He also shared with the group the importance of living in the now.
"After college is life, there's no more school, just LIFE," Johnson said. "You have to live now preparing for that."
Men's tennis freshman Sam Fischer has been a fan of Johnson for several years, following his career through social media.
"I have always loved watching Inky's videos," Fischer said. "He is so inspiring and being able to watch him live was pretty cool. I love the way he talks about character, specifically what your last name means to you as well as other people. We are all writing our own stories and he inspires people to be the best version of them self."
Johnson's talk is just the latest in a series of programming designed to fulfill Alabama Life Skill's mission to provide University of Alabama student-athletes opportunities for growth through personal development and service opportunities. The goal is to empower student-athletes to be difference-makers and people of positive influence as they pursue success at Alabama and beyond.
