SCOUTING ALABAMA
- Alabama opened the season with a 2-1 record at the Mortar Board Premier last weekend in West Lafayette, Ind. The Crimson Tide posted wins over Cleveland State and Oral Roberts on Friday, Aug. 25 before falling to 25th-ranked Purdue on Saturday, Aug. 26.
- The win over Cleveland State saw Alabama overcome a 0-2 match deficit to win in five sets. The win marked the first five-set victory for the Tide after facing a 0-2 match deficit since Aug. 29, 2015 at Cal State Fullerton.
- For their efforts over the weekend, sophomore Hayley McSparin and senior Leah Lawrence were named to the Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament team. McSparin led the team with 35 kills (3.18/set) and a .371 hitting percentage, adding eight block assists for a total of 39.0 points. Lawrence stuffed a team-leading 11 blocks, three solo and eight assisted, while also hitting .333 with 23 kills.

LAST TIME OUT: MORTAR BOARD PREMIER
- Alabama 3, Cleveland State 2: Facing an early 0-2 match deficit in Alabama's season opener against Cleveland State, the Tide rallied to win the remaining three frames to claim the five-set victory. The win is Alabama's first five-set victory after a 0-2 match deficit since Aug. 29, 2015 at Cal State Fullerton. McSparin led the Tide's offense with a .462 hitting percentage and a career-best 22 kills. Neelon earned a double-double in her collegiate debut with 47 assists and 19 digs.
- Alabama 3, Oral Roberts 0: Alabama needed just three sets to dispatch Oral Roberts in Friday's second match, a 3-0 sweep for the Crimson Tide. Alabama hit .303 as a team, led by an error-free performance by Lawrence in which she posted 10 kills on 14 swings, good for a .714 attack percentage.
- No. 25 Purdue 3, Alabama 0: Alabama fought to a close finish in the opening frame, losing to 25th-ranked Purdue by just four points but the Boilermakers posted double-digit wins in the remaining two sets to complete the sweep. After hitting .310 in the opening set, the Tide struggled offensively ending the match with a .010 clip. Freshman Christine Jarman led the team with a season-high eight digs, while Abolanle Onipede, Leah Lawrence and Hayley McSparin combined for 12 of the team's 19 kills.
CAREER RECORD WATCH
- Senior Leah Lawrence is already among the top 10 at Alabama in career total blocks (9th - 337), block assists (7th - 282) and solo blocks (9th - 55). She is 101 blocks away from the school record of 438 held by Shelly Adamcik (1999-02). Lawrence has surpassed 100 blocks in two of her three previous seasons at Alabama, including a personal-best 122 last year.
- Senior Natalie Murison has anchored the Tide defense over her career in crimson and white, earning 1,295 career digs to place third on the all-time career list at Alabama. She is only 65 shy of tying Lorian Newcomer (1993-95) in second with 1,360 and is 429 away from Amy Pauly's (2005-08) record total of 1,724. Murison has surpassed 400 digs in each of her three previous years, including a personal-best 469 as a sophomore in 2015.
UP NEXT
Alabama makes its 2017 home debut next weekend, hosting the Hampton Inn Bama Bash at Foster Auditorium. The Tide opens against Tennessee State and Hofstra on Friday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. CT and 7:30 p.m. CT, respectively, before concluding against Furman on Saturday, Sept. 9 at noon.
