Alabama Women’s Tennis Drops Road Match Against South Carolina on Sunday Afternoon

The Crimson Tide hosts in-state rival Auburn on Friday, April 7, at 6 p.m. CT at the Alabama Tennis Stadium
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 34th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team lost a 4-3 decision to the 13th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to a 7-13 overall record including a 1-9 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Gamecocks improve to 14-6 and 5-4 in league play.
South Carolina registered the first doubles victory of the contest, as Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Brigit Folland defeated senior Joanna Savva and sophomore Andie Daniell in a 6-3 decision on court two. The Tide replied back with a doubles win of its own, as senior Danielle Spielmann and junior Smith Hinton won a 6-3 decision over Mia Horvit and Silvia Chinellato on court three. With the doubles point on the line, Alabama's No. 25 ranked doubles tandem in senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff topped Hadley Berg and Caroline Dailey, 6-4, on the top court to give the Tide a 1-0 match advantage headed into singles play.
Spielmann (No. 3) won in straight sets over Caroline Dailey, 6-1, 6-0, to start singles action, giving Alabama a 2-0 match lead. The Gamecocks went on to trim the Tide's match lead to 2-1, as its No. 75 ranked singles player Horvit defeated Daniell (No. 2) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Alabama's No. 38 ranked singles player Routliffe (No. 1) collected a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Gamecocks' No. 36 ranked singles player Gamarra Martins on the top court to lengthen Alabama's match lead to 3-1. South Carolina came storming back, as the Gamecocks went on to collect wins on courts four and six to equalize the match score at 3-3. Chinellato outlasted Hinton (No. 4), 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, before Folland registered a win in straight sets over freshman Juliana Valero (No. 6), 6-4, 6-2. With the match point on the line, Berg topped Pothoff (No. 5) in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, to clinch the South Carolina match victory.
The Tide will be back in action on Friday, April 7, when it is set to host in-state rival Auburn at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in match that is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.
