Alabama Women’s Tennis Upsets In-State Rival Auburn on Friday Night

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 38th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team upset in-state rival No. 12 Auburn in a 4-3 decision on Friday night at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to an 8-13 overall record including a 2-9 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers fall to 19-8 and 3-7 in league play.
The Tide dominated doubles play, as senior Danielle Spielmann and junior Smith Hinton collected the first double's victory of the contest in a 6-3 decision over Georgie Axon and Reka Muller on court three. Senior Joanna Savva and sophomore Andie Daniell clinched the doubles point for Alabama, as the pair topped Andie Dikosavljevic and Alannah Griffin in a 6-4 result on court two giving the Tide a 1-0 match lead headed into singles play.
Alabama took a quick 2-0 match advantage to start singles, as Danielle (No. 3) upset Auburn's No. 115 ranked singles player Taylor Russo in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. The Tigers responded back with a win of its own, as Axon defeated Hinton (No. 4) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, trimming Alabama's lead to 2-1. The Tide's No. 23 ranked singles player in senior Erin Routliffe (No. 1) went on to outlast Auburn's No. 36 ranked singles player Dikosavljevic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to extend Alabama's match lead to 3-1. Auburn rattled off back-to-back wins on courts two and six to equalize the match score at 3-3. The Tigers' No. 31 ranked singles player Alizee Michaud overcame Alabama's No. 121 ranked singles player Daniell (No. 2), 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, before Caroline Turner won in straight sets over Savva (No. 6), 6-1, 7-6, to tie the match score at 3-3. With the match point on the line, freshman Maddie Pothoff (No. 5) won a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 decision over Roos van der Zwaan, resulting in the final match score.
The Tide will be back in action on Friday, April 14, when it is set to host the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Alabama Tennis Stadium at 4 p.m. CT.
