Sanders was the top scorer in the state of Arkansas and 29th nationally in scoring
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Jayana Sanders, the top scorer in the state of Arkansas, signed her national letter of intent to play for Alabama women's basketball, head coach Kristy Curry announced on Wednesday.
"We are thrilled to add Jayana to our Alabama family," said Curry. "Jayana is an explosive scorer who can put up points in a variety of different ways. She has a scorer's mentality, but she also has the ability to distribute and create for her teammates. We love her confidence and competitiveness and believe she will be a fantastic piece to the puzzle. My staff and I cannot wait for her to get on campus this summer and get to work."
Sanders, a 5-7 guard from Pine Bluff, Ark., scored 2,004 points during her career at Dollarway High School. As a senior, she averaged 28.7 points per game, which, in addition to leading the state, was 29th nationally. Sanders also ranked 20th nationally in field goals (303) and fifth in the nation in free throws (247). She scored 50 points twice during the 2016-17 season and earned all-conference and all-state honors to go along with her MVP nod at the South Arkansas High School Showcase.
Throughout Sanders' high school career, she averaged 22.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.9 assists while shooting 47.6 percent from the floor.
Sanders joins November signee Ariyah Copeland, a 6-3 post out of Columbus, Ga., to make up the Crimson Tide's incoming freshman class. Alabama also has three transfers in Amber Richardson, DaiJia Ruffin and Jasmine Walker as well as the rest of its 2016-17 squad back for next season.
