Alabama Men’s Tennis Edged By Georgia on Saturday Afternoon

ATHENS, Ga. – The Alabama men's tennis team lost a 7-0 decision to the 14th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to an 8-12 overall record including a 1-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs improve to 11-6 and 7-0 in league play.
Georgia's No. 8 ranked doubles tandem Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb defeated Alabama's No. 40 ranked doubles team in sophomores Spencer Richey and Mazen Osama, 6-4, on court one to start doubles play. The Tide responded, as freshmen Alexey Nesterov and Thibault Cancel topped the Bulldogs' No. 48 ranked doubles team Nathan Ponwith and Emil Reinberg in a 6-4 decision on court two. With the doubles point on the line, Wayne Montgomery and Walker Duncan outlasted freshmen Zhe Zhou and Edson Ortiz in a 7-6(8) thriller on court three to clinch the doubles point giving Georgia a 1-0 match lead headed into singles play.
The Bulldogs' No. 65 ranked singles player Reinberg topped Ortiz (No. 3) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, before Loeb won in straight sets over Zhou (No. 6), 6-1, 6-2, to extend Georgia's match lead to 3-0. Zielinski overcame Nesterov (No. 4) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the Bulldogs match victory. Alabama's No. 35 ranked singles player Osama (No. 1) lost a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Ponwith, before Walker Duncan claimed a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Richey (No. 5) to lengthen Georgia's match lead to 6-0. The Bulldogs' No. 32 ranked singles player Montgomery defeated Alabama's No. 105 ranked singles player Cancel, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8, resulting in the final match score.
The Tide will be back in action on Thursday, March 30, at 6 p.m. CT when it is set to host the Florida Gators at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
