Alabama Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 13 Kentucky on Friday Night

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 45th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team upset the 13th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in a 4-2 decision on Friday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to a 7-10 overall record including a 1-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 12-3 and 4-2 in league play.
Sophomore Andie Daniell and senior Joanna Savva won a 6-3 decision on court two over Morgan Chumney and Akva Parazinskaite to start doubles play. Kentucky responded, as the Wildcats' Emily Fanning and Justina Milkuskyte topped freshman Juliana Valero and senior Danielle Spielmann, 6-4, on court three. With the doubles point on the line, Alabama's No. 25 ranked doubles pair in senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff defeated Kentucky's No. 4 ranked doubles team Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi, 7-6(4), to clinch the doubles point giving Alabama a 1-0 match lead going into singles play.
Milkuskyte defeated Valero (No. 5) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to begin singles play tying the match score at 1-1. Alabama's No. 38 ranked singles player Routliffe (No. 1) won in straights sets over Kentucky's No. 19 ranked singles player Sutjiadi, 6-3, 6-4, before Daniell (No. 2) topped the Wildcats' No. 125 ranked singles player Parazinskaite in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to give the Tide a 3-1 match lead. Kentucky responded with a win in straight sets on court three to trim Alabama's match advantage to 3-2, as Adachi overcame Spielmann (No. 3), 6-2, 7-5. Junior Smith Hinton (No. 4) clinched the Tide match victory, as she outlasted Emily Fanning, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, resulting in the final match score.
The Tide will be back in action on Sunday, March 26, when it hosts No. 8 Vanderbilt at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in a match that is set to start 1 p.m. CT.
