Alabama Women’s Tennis Drops Road Match to Texas A&M on Sunday Afternoon

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 44th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team lost a 5-2 decision to the 22nd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies on Sunday Afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to 6-10 overall and 0-6 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Aggies improve to 10-7 and 2-4 in league play.
Senior Joanna Savva and sophomore Andie Daniell teamed up to tally the first doubles victory of the match, as the duo won a 6-2 decision on court two over Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma. Texas A&M's No. 19 ranked doubles pair in Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale defeated Alabama's No. 25 ranked doubles tandem in senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff in a 6-2 decision on court one. With the doubles point on the line, the Aggies' Macarena Olivares and Stefania Hristov topped senior Danielle Spielmann and freshman Juliana Valero in a 7-6(8) battle on court three to take a 1-0 match lead going into singles.
Spielmann (No. 3) registered the first singles victory of the match, as she defeated Saska Gavrilovska in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to equalize the match score at 1-1. Texas A&M's No. 85 ranked singles player Bhosale topped the Tide's No. 124 ranked singles player Daniell (No. 2) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, before Gonzalez won in straight sets over Pothoff (No. 4), 6-2, 6-4, to extend the Aggies' match lead to 3-1. Olivares went on to claim a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Savva (No. 5) to clinch the Texas A&M match victory. Valero (No. 6) lost a 6-4, 7-5 decision, before Alabama's No. 59 ranked singles player Routliffe (No.1) outlasted Texas A&M's No. 44 ranked singles player Pierson, 7-5, 7-6(5), resulting in the final match score.
The Tide will be back in action on Friday, March 24, when it is set to host the Kentucky Wildcats at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in a match that is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.
