Sophomore Davis Riley withdraws from first round with injury
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Alabama men's golf team is in a tie for 11th overall with an 8-over par 296 during Sunday's opening round of the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic. Tide sophomore Davis Riley, who came into the spring season opener second on the team in stroke average, was forced to withdraw from the first day due to an injury.
It is possible for Riley to return to action in Monday's second round. He will test the injury prior to the Tide's tee time to determine if he can play.
Despite the setback, Alabama will enter round two just seven strokes back of a top five spot. Georgia leads the 15-team field with a 7-under 281, two strokes ahead of second place North Carolina State (283). Clemson (284) is in third, followed by Kentucky (286) and Ohio State (289) to round out the top five, respectively.
The Tide was led by junior Steven Setterstrom, who finished the day at 2-under par 70. The Mobile, Ala., native is in a tie for seventh overall and just five strokes back of overall leader Stephen Franken of North Carolina State (67).
Junior Lee Hodges is in a tie for 12th after carding a 1-under par 71 on the 6,902-yard Rid Mar River Course. Junior Jonathan Hardee is in a tie for 37th at 2-over 74, while redshirt freshman Josh Sedeno rounds out the Tide in a tie for 70th (81).
