Crimson Tide forced to play shorthanded due to Davis Riley injury
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Alabama men's golf team is in a tie for 13th after two rounds of the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic. The Crimson Tide, which was forced to play for a second straight day without injured sophomore Davis Riley, has a 36-hole team total of 17-over par 593 (296-297).
Riley, who earned honorable mention All-America honors and All-SEC recognition a year ago, withdrew just three holes into Sunday's opening round and was unable to compete during the second round of play on Monday. As a result, the Tide was forced to play with a four-man lineup, meaning each individual's score counted toward the team total.
Junior Steven Setterstrom continues to play well in Riley's absence, as he carded a second consecutive round of 2-under par 70 on Monday and will enter Tuesday's final 18 holes in a tie for third overall at 4-under 140 (70-70). Setterstrom's 36-hole total matches his career-best 36-hole output, which he originally set at the 2015 Warrior Makai Princeville Invitational. The Mobile, Ala., native is four strokes back of overall leader Bryson Nimmer of Clemson (8-under 136).
Junior Jonathan Hardee is also among the individual leaders, as he is in a tie for 23rd position with a two-day total of 1-over par 145 (74-71) on the 6,945-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club River Course. Redshirt freshman Josh Sedeno improved nine strokes from his 81 on Sunday to a 2-over par 72 in the second round and is in a tie for 61st at 153, while junior Lee Hodges rounds out the Tide in 65th with a 155 (71-84).
Clemson, ranked No. 21 in the nation, hold the clubhouse lead with a 16-under 560, seven strokes ahead of No. 10 Georgia (567). Kentucky (571) is in third, followed by North Carolina State (575) in fourth and Georgia Tech (578) and Middle Tennessee State (578) who are tied for fifth.
The 54-hole event concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 5:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found at www.birdiefire.com.
