Haugh Posts School Record in Weight Throw on First Day of Tiger Paw Invitational

Chelanga posts ninth-fastest time of the season in 5,000 meters at Iowa State Classic
CLEMSON, S.C. – Daniel Haugh set a school record in the men's weight throw and the Crimson Tide posted 13 efforts that rank in the top-10 in school history on the first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson University on Friday.
Haugh, who set the school record in the event earlier in the year with a throw of 73-8 1/4 (22.46m), improved on that mark by more than three feet with a winning effort of 73-11 3/4 (22.55m). The Marietta, Ga., native now owns the top nine throws in the event in Alabama history. Four of those marks were posted in Friday's competition.
On the women's side, senior Alex Gholston finished second in the 400 meters in a time of 52.18, the second-fastest time in the event in Alabama history and a time that ranks among the top 10 nationally this season.
Alabama also had runners in action at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa on Friday. Junior Alfred Chelanga finished sixth in the men's invitational 5,000 meters in a time of 13:48.12 a time that is the ninth-fastest in the NCAA this season and the fourth-fastest time in school history. Senior Antibash Kosgei finished 20th in 14:02.21, the seventh-fastest time ever at UA.
"Overall I was happy with the day," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said following the meet. "We had some good results and we're inching up the SEC and NCAA lists. We need to keep our focus and finish strong tomorrow."
In addition to Chelanga and Kosgei's performances in Ames, junior Conner Thompson finished ninth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:31.30. Senior Robbie Farnham-Rose finished 16th in the men's invitational Mile in 4:10.40. For the women, senior Hannah Waggoner finished 21st in the invitational 3,000 meters at Iowa State in 9:37.36. Sophomore Nicole Gardner finished 36th in 9:52.57.
Day 2 of the Tiger Paw Invitational will get underway Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Running events will begin at 11 a.m. at the Clemson University Indoor Complex.
Alabama will also have two runners in action on Day 2 of the Iowa State Classic. Payton Ballard will compete in the men's mile at 1 p.m. CT and Jacopo Lahbi will run in the men's invitational 800 meters at 3:30 p.m.
Men's Day 1 Event Summaries – Tiger Paw Invitational
Mile – Freshman Patrick Grant finished fourth in a personal-best time of 4:12.25. Fellow freshmen Elliott Miller (4:15.74) and Clay Austell (4:19.75) finished sixth and 11th, respectively, in personal-best times.
400 Meters – Senior Steven Gayle finished fifth in a personal-best time of 46.77, the eighth-fastest time in UA history. Sophomore Skyler Bowden finished 12th in a personal-best 47.62. Freshman Will Allen also posted a personal best of 47.92 to finish 15th
60 Meter Hurdles – Junior Ruebin Walters finished second in the men's 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 7.78, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Junior Angelo Goss finished fifth in 7.83, which ties for the sixth-fastest time at Alabama. Goss (7.83) and Walters (7.86) finished third and fourth in the prelims to advance to the final.
60 Meters – Junior Terry Jernigan finished 17th in the 60 meters prelims in 6.92 and did not advance to the final.
5,000 Meters – Sophomores Garrett Bull (15:00.12) and Andrew Bull (15:04.22) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's 5,000 meters. Both times are personal bests.
Pole Vault – Sophomore Will Herrscher finished sixth in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 16-8 3/4 (5.10m). Freshman Henry Barrett finished eight with a personal-best mark of 15-9 (4.80m). Sophomore Jake Zalesky did not record a clean vault.

Weight Throw – Junior Daniel Haugh set another school record in the men's weight throw with a winning effort of 73-11 3/4 (22.55m), breaking his previous school record of 73-8 1/4 (22.46m) set at the Commodore Invitational on Jan. 13. In all, four of Haugh's throws on Friday rank in the top 10 at Alabama and he now holds the top nine marks all-time at UA. Senior Elias Hakansson finished second at 70-9 1/4 (21.57m). His mark is the 10th-best in UA history.

Mile – Junior Jessica Gray finished ninth in a time of 4:59.86. Freshmen Gabby Prizio (5:18.36) and Ebie Douglas (5:23.44) finished 21st and 25th, respectively, in personal-best times.
400 Meters – Senior Alex Gholston finished second in the 400 meters in a personal-best 52.81. The time is the fourth-fastest in school history. Fellow senior Domonique Williams finished third in a personal-best 53.04, which is sixth-best in UA history.
60 Meter Hurdles – Senior Vanessa Clerveaux finished second in the women's 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.19. The time is the fifth-fastest in school history. Clerveaux posted a time of 8.38 in the preliminaries.
60 Meters – Freshman Symone Darius finished sixth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.46. Darius advanced out of the prelims with a time of 7.46. Vanessa Clerveaux (7.50), Olivia Fotopoulou (7.52), Janel Pate (7.59) and Brianna Sims (7.66) did not qualify for the finals.
5,000 Meters – Running in her first collegiate 5,000 meter race, freshman Hannah Capek finished second in 17:13.19. Fellow freshman Elisabeth Danis finished eighth in 17:30.34. Sophomore Alison Ringle was 10th in 18:06.22.
Long Jump – Senior Quanesha Burks won her second women's long jump competition in as many attempts in 2017 with a winning jump of 21-2 1/2 (6.46m). Junior Filippa Fotopoulou was third at 20-5 (6.22m).
