Junior becomes fifth Alabama runner to earn the conference’s top cross country award
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama junior Vincent Kiprop was selected as the Southeastern Conference Men's Runner of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. The annual cross country awards are voted on by the league's head coaches.
The Kericho, Kenya native won the SEC men's cross country title on Oct. 27, circling the 8,000-meter course at the University of Georgia in 23:15.4 to lead an Alabama sweep of the top three spots as fellow UA juniors Gilbert Kigen (23:18.8) and Alfred Chelanga (23:23.4) finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Tide to a second-place finish. The runner-up finish is the first in the top two for Alabama since 2010.
Kiprop is the fifth UA athlete to be honored as the SEC men's runner of the year. David Kimani claimed the award in 2001 and 2002, while Emmanuel Bor earned the honor in 2007. Tyson Davis (2008) and Antibahs Kosgei (2015) were Alabama's most recent winners prior to this year.
The Tide men's and women's teams will be in action at the 2017 NCAA South Regional Nov. 10 at the Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa. The women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 9 a.m. CT with the men's 10,000-meter race to follow at 10 a.m. CT.
