Alabama Rowing Caps Fall Season with Strong Showing vs. UCF Saturday in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama rowing concluded its fall season Saturday, hosting UCF for a slate of races on the Black Warrior River.
"We had a goal with regard to setting us up with UCF as a way to sort of finish up our fall in a little more relaxed atmosphere," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "As a body of work, I was really pleased with how the team did."
The Crimson Tide and the Knights each competed in a pair of 2,500-meter pieces and three 1,500-meter pieces. In the First Novice 8+, Alabama's "Cashman" crew swept all five of its races, posing a best time of 8:23.67 in the 2,500 meters and 5:07.23 in the 1,500 meters.
Alabama and UCF battled in a tough series of races in the First Varsity 8+, with the Knights claiming both 2,500-meter races and the Tide winning one of the three 1,500-meter pieces with a best time of 4:43.35 in the latter. Alabama's Second Varsity 8+ crew won both of its 2,500-meter pieces and, racing alongside with the 1V8+ crews in the 1,500 meters, battled to a third-place finish in the final piece with its best time of the day in 4:54.40.
The Tide's trio of boats in the Third Varsity 8+ swept the top three spots in three of its five races and the "Mal Moore" boat won four of the five, speeding to a best time of 8:01.48 downstream in the first 2,500-meter piece and a 4:57.89 finish in the first 1,500-meter race.
In the Second Novice 8+, Alabama and UCF split the two 2,500-meter pieces while the Tide's crew won all three in the 1,500 meters, posting a best time of 5:46.59.
The Crimson Tide will break from competition before resuming the season in the spring semester, facing Eastern Michigan in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, Feb. 24.
