The Crimson Tide kicks off its spring season campaign against Eastern Michigan at 9 a.m. CT on the Black Warrior River.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a three-month break from competition, Alabama rowing returns to the water on Saturday to kick off its spring season against Eastern Michigan at 9 a.m. CT.
"The main goal we want to accomplish this year is to be fast enough to get a serious look by the NCAA committee to go to the NCAA Championships," head coach Larry Davis said. "We've put together a very tough, later part of the spring schedule because that's what the NCAA looks at more closely."
Alabama and Eastern Michigan won't race the typical 2,000-meter spring course length but will instead race a number of 1,000-meter pieces. Starting at 9 a.m., the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ will compete, followed by the First Varsity 4+ and the Second Varsity 4+. The boats will then go through the same rotation three more times for a total of four sessions, concluding roughly at 11:30 a.m.
"We've got some extremely tough competition ahead," Davis said. "Our goal is to be doing the things that lead up to that point to where we're building boat speed and the confidence and the toughness we're going to need to row against that kind of competition and have success in beating crews that are ranked higher than us."
This weekend is the first of seven spring races for the Crimson Tide. It also marks the beginning of a month-long home stretch where Alabama will face SMU on March 3 and host its Crimson Tide Invitational March 24. The Invitational will feature Creighton, Jacksonville and Dayton. It will also serve as the Tide's senior day and its annual Power of Pink event.
"We're certainly looking forward to some good crowds over this stretch," Davis said. "Anytime you can have a very supportive crowd, it just makes it that much easier to accomplish what you want to do. We always want to make sure we send our seniors off and thank them for what they've done for the team over the last four years, so it'll be a good way to finish off our home stand and get ready for the next step of the journey."
