TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – As Alabama swimming and diving cranks things back up in the classroom for the spring semester this week, both the men's and women's teams are coming off a fall semester that not only included fast swims and ripped dives, but another extraordinary turn in the classroom as well.
The Crimson Tide women posted a 3.55 team grade point average (GPA) for the fall, marking the fourth year in a row they have combined for over a 3.5 GPA. The Alabama men also earned a 3.55, their highest in recent memory.
"We're very proud of how the men and women did in the classroom this past semester," UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. "We believe that academic excellence and athletic excellence go hand in hand both are equally emphasized on our team. To have both the men and women attain this level of academic excellence is a gratifying achievement for our program."
Individually, 21 Tide swimmers and divers earned a 4.0 grade point average in the fall, including 12 women and nine men.
Among the women earning 4.0s in the fall were senior All-American Caroline Korst as well as fellow seniors Kara Fredlock, Dakota Toner, Taylor Zablocki and Emily Zapinski, sophomores Morgan Fleming, Sarah Helm and Nicole Raicik as well as rookies Cameron Brown, Line Bruun, Alexis Souther and Alex Surrency. Overall, 26 women earned a GPA of 3.0 or better in the fall, including 20 that earned a place on the Dean's List (3.5 or better GPA).
On the men's side of things, NCAA champion Pavel Romanov earned a 4.0 as well as senior All-American Anton McKee and sophomore All-Americans Laurent Bams and Robert Howard. Seniors Jacob Kelsoe and Carl Madden, junior Will Freeman and freshmen Daniel Kober and Kyle Maas also earned 4.0s in the fall. A total of 29 men earned a GPA of 3.0 or better in the fall, including 22 that earned a place on the Dean's List (3.5 or better GPA).
The Crimson Tide women started 2017 with a win at Tulane, while the men started the New Year with a win at LSU. Both teams return to action on Jan. 20 at Georgia Tech for a dual meet and close out the regular season the next day, Jan. 21, at home against Florida State.
