The Battle Plan

Commencement Weekend at Alabama
The month of May is an exciting time in college sports, as our teams enter the stretch drive of their seasons and championships begin to be decided. While I am excited about all the big-time competition that will be going on in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham this weekend, including a baseball series against Auburn at the New Joe and a softball series against Georgia at Rhoads Stadium, as well the NCAA Women's Golf Regional at Shoal Creek, it will be the events unfolding in Coleman Coliseum on Friday and Saturday that are the most impactful and of which I am most proud.
Today and tomorrow, the coliseum hosts spring commencement ceremonies. While not all of them will take part (several are busy with the aforementioned competitions) more than 70 Crimson Tide student-athletes have earned their degrees following the spring semester. That number, impressive in own right, includes two NCAA champions, 11 All-Americans from nine different sports, and four Academic All-Americans.
Our May graduates include softball all-star Haylie McCleney, the 2016 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A three-year All-American on the diamond, Haylie has also earned back-to-back Academic All-America honors and was the 2015 Softball Academic All-American of the Year. Other Crimson Tide Academic All-Americans earning their degrees this weekend include track and field's Alexis Paine and volleyball's Krystal Rivers and Sierra Wilson.
Haylie is one of three SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports, joining Retin Obasohan from men's basketball and Abby Lutzenkirchen from soccer. Four student-athletes (Retin Obasohan, Alexis Paine, women's basketball's Nikki Hegstetter and football's Richard Mullaney) will received their master's degrees this weekend. Richard and CFP Championship Game Offensive MVP O.J. Howard are two of eight Tide football players earning degrees following the spring semester. With their matriculation, a total of 36 members of our 2015 national champion football team have earned at least one degree from Alabama.
We are extremely proud of all our graduates. They have fulfilled a vital portion of our mission which is to recruit and develop student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in intercollegiate athletics, to educate and prepare our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in life after graduation, and to accomplish both with honor and integrity. With the completion of their undergraduate degree they are now positioned to become contributing members of society and have a better chance to reach their full potential as people.
Another Amazing NFL Draft Showing by the Tide
As you probably know, our outstanding center, Ryan Kelly, was selected with the No. 18 overall pick in the first round of the National Football League Draft by the Indianapolis Colts last week. Ryan's selection gives Alabama an amazing 18 first round picks in the last eight NFL drafts. Seven Crimson Tide players were drafted in the first three rounds. Since the conclusion of the draft on Sunday, eight more players have earned NFL opportunities by signing undrafted free-agent contracts.
Linebacker Reggie Ragland was taken in the second round by the Buffalo Bills. Four picks later the Tennessee Titans took Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry with the 45th pick. The Detroit Lions immediately followed by taking defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson with the 46th pick. The Seattle Seahawks traded up to the 49th pick to select Jarran Reed, as four Crimson Tide players were selected in a span of eight picks. Cornerback Cyrus Jones was the final Alabama player chosen in the second round at No. 29 (60th overall) by the New England Patriots. Running back Kenyan Drake was taken with the 10th pick of the third round (No. 73 overall) by the Miami Dolphins.
An amazing 55 Crimson Tide players have been drafted in the past eight years, including 18 in the first round and 35 in the first three rounds.
Quarterback Jake Coker (Arizona Cardinals), linebacker Dillon Lee (New Orleans Saints), defensive end D.J. Pettway (Saints), offensive lineman Dominick Jackson (Washington Redskins), defensive back Geno Matias-Smith (Redskins), wide receiver Richard Mullaney (Houston Texans), fullback Michael Nysewander (Kansas City Chiefs) and defensive tackle Darren Lake (San Francisco 49ers) signed free-agent deals.
Lauren Beers: SEC Community Service Leader of the Year
Seeing the effort our student-athletes put forth when it comes to making a difference in the community and excelling in academics is impressive and inspiring. A vital part of the spirit of our Mission statement is the belief that, for our students to be truly well rounded and successful, it is not enough to be champions athletically and academically, but they also need to be engaged members of society. This is why we are so proud of Lauren Beers for being named the 2015-16 Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Female Community Service Leader of the Year, announced earlier this week by the SEC office.
The daughter of Patricia and Rick Beers, Lauren grew up on a farm in the little town of Warren Center, Pa. Much of who she is was shaped by her upbringing on a dairy farm as one of seven children. She is a tremendous example of what is possible when you dedicate yourself to being the best you can be in every facet of life. A champion in the classroom and the gym, she has given generously of her scant free time to make a difference in her community. She is a young lady of impressive character and compassion, and we are very proud of what she has accomplished in all areas of the collegiate experience. We are also proud that Lauren is the fifth Crimson Tide student-athlete to earn this honor since its inception in 1996, ranking us second among SEC schools.
Fulfilling the Mission: Haylie McCleney
As I mentioned earlier, Haylie McCleney, our softball team's world-class center fielder, is the 2016 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and what an honor that is! To be judged the top female scholar in the hyper-competitive SEC is fitting recognition of the extraordinary career that Haylie has fashioned. As she leads our No. 4 ranked softball team into the postseason, the senior from Morris, Ala., continues to be an amazing example of what can be accomplished when you work tirelessly to be your best in all aspects of life.
Haylie's honor is also a continuation of a proud legacy that our athletics program has built in this particular honor. We are now tied with Georgia for the most McWhorter Award winners in the 31-year history of the honor. Seven of our honorees have come since 2000, the most of any school over that span and a clear sign of our deep, continuing commitment to excellence in the classroom. Haylie joins past Alabama greats Julie Estin (1987, gymnastics), Jeff Laubenthal (1992, baseball), Meredith Willard (1997, gymnastics), Kristin Sterner (2003, gymnastics), Lauren Imwalle (2004, soccer), Emeel Salem (2007, baseball), Joseph Sykora (2008, golf), Barrett Jones (2013, football) and Cory Whitsett (2014, golf) among our SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
We also learned on Thursday that Haylie, Sydney Littlejohn and Chandler Dare earned a place on the CoSIDA Softball Academic All-District list. While a great honor by itself, earning All-District honors also advances Haylie, Sydney and Chandler to the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-America honors. It is exciting and gratifying to see our student-athletes continue to reap the rewards for their hard work, dedication and extraordinary achievements.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Scholarship Funding is Critical to our Success
Graduation is such an important time at The University of Alabama. The primary aspect of our Athletics Department's mission is to ensure that our student-athletes graduate while preparing them for success beyond graduation. The academic success of our student-athletes is extremely important to me. My parents were both educators and I know first-hand the transformative effect that an education can make in a person's life. Not only do we strive to help our students earn diplomas, we also want them to grow and develop as people while they are here. We want them to benefit in every way from the experience of being on our campus. Alabama's Center for Athletic Student Services, housed in the Bill Battle Academic Center, provides our student-athletes with tremendous opportunities to help them be academically successful through exceptional and comprehensive academic services.
It is critical that we provide opportunities for our student-athletes to be successful. I am proud of the strides we have made in this area and of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for their hard work and focus on academics. As many of our seniors prepare to graduate this week, I want to remind you that there are several ways you can support our efforts in this area. Providing scholarship assistance is always needed and only continues to grow in importance. You can begin to endow a scholarship with at least $25,000, which is payable over time. You can also support the Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund with any amount which helps fund our annual $16.1 million scholarship bill. You can also give to Athletic Student Services to assist with operational and program development expenses. To learn about more ways to support the academic efforts of our student-athletes, please visit www.crimsontidefoundation.org.

Sports Updates
Men's Basketball
Coach Avery Johnson and his staff were excited this week to announce the signing of 6-3 guard Corban Collins, who will be transferring from Morehead State to the Alabama for the 2016-17 season. Corban was second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference in 2015-16, graduating with a bachelor's degree in health promotion last December. He will be attending graduate school at Alabama, making him immediately eligible to suit up for the Tide next season.
Baseball
We host the Auburn Tigers this weekend at Sewell-Thomas Stadium and are expecting a great crowd at all three games. Saturday's game is already sold out (our eighth this season), with tonight's opener and Sunday's game nearing sellout crowds. The Tide has won each of the last four SEC meetings against the Tigers (not including the Capital City Classic midweek game each year), and swept a three-game series at Auburn last season. Coach Mitch Gaspard and his team need your support to get some late-season momentum going again this season, as the Tide is 16-8 at home this year and 25-20 overall entering the final stretch of the regular season.
Men's Golf
The Tide has earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, a three-day, 54-hole Regional to be held at Ol' Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa Monday-Wednesday, May 16-18, and is free to the public. This marks the Tide's 12th consecutive invitation to NCAA postseason and 25th appearance overall. Alabama has won three of the last four NCAA Regionals and four total in program history, capturing the 2009 NCAA Galloway (N.J.) Regional, the 2012 NCAA Athens (Ga.) Regional, the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge (La.) Regional and the 2014 NCAA Auburn (Ala.) Regional. The top five teams from each of the six regional sites, and the top individual finisher not on an advancing team, will advance to the NCAA Championships to be played in Eugene, Ore., on May 27-June 1. A total of 30 teams and six individuals will compete at the NCAA Championships. Congratulations to three members of Coach Jay Seawell's team who recently were recognized by the SEC for outstanding accomplishments on and off the course. Robby Shelton has been selected First Team All-SEC, while Davis Riley earned a spot on the league's second team and all-freshman team. Junior Robby Prater was named to the SEC Community Service team. Robby Shelton earned first team honors for the third straight year, becoming one of only four golfers in Crimson Tide history to do so, joining Steve Lowery (1981-83), Bud Cauley (2009-11), Cory Whitsett (2011-14) and Bobby Wyatt (2012-14). Davis's selection on the all-freshman team marks the third straight season that an Alabama rookie has earned the honor (Robby Shelton did it in 2014 and Jonathan Hardee in 2015). Davis is the ninth Alabama golfer over the past seven seasons to earn a spot on the league's all-freshman team.
Women's Golf
Coach Mic Potter's SEC champions will compete tomorrow in the third, and final, round of the NCAA Regional Tournament at Shoal Creek in Birmingham. Through two rounds the top-ranked Tide stand tied for fourth overall. The top six teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 20-25 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Last weekend, our outstanding freshman, Cheyenne Knight, finished as the low amateur at the LPGA Volunteers of America (VoA) Shootout and was the only non-professional to make the cut as she shot a 1-under par 283 to tie for 29th at the Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. Cheyenne earned a spot in the tournament by tying for low collegian in the High School & College Shootout held at Las Colinas in April to earn one of the four amateur slots in the tournament. Her appearance at the VoA was her first on the LPGA Tour. The Tide was well-represented in the SEC's 2016 women's golf awards. Senior Emma Talley and Cheyenne earned first team All-SEC honors while senior Janie Jackson and sophomore Lakareber Abe were named to the second team. Cheyenne was also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team while junior Cammie Gray was named to the SEC's Community Service Team. Meanwhile, Mic was named SEC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career (he also earned the honor in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). Obviously, Mic is richly deserving of the honor and we are all very proud of Mic, assistant coach Susan Rosenstiel, and the entire program for the level of excellence they have consistently achieved.
Rowing
Coach Larry Davis's team concluded its regular season last weekend in Tuscaloosa by sweeping three races against SMU. That capped a regular-season home sweep spanning all three regattas on the Black Warrior River this season where the Tide did not lose a single race. The team also celebrated the careers of its 15 seniors in their final home race and wore pink t-shirts in honor of our Power of Pink initiative. Coach Davis added five new athletes during the spring signing period, all of whom will join the team for the 2016-17 season in what Larry feels should be one of the most well-rounded classes the program has ever signed. Next, the Tide heads to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Big 12 Championships on May 14-15. The winner of the league title will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Softball
Coach Patrick Murphy's team continues its drive for a high SEC finish while remaining ranked in the top five nationally. This weekend, the Tide plays its final home SEC series of the season at Rhoads Stadium, taking on Georgia in a three-game series starting tonight. This weekend marks the end of the regular season, with the SEC Tournament coming up next week in Starkville, Miss., followed by the NCAA Tournament the following week. Your outstanding support of our program has us on pace to set an NCAA attendance record! Through 23 home games, Alabama is averaging 3,018 fans per game. If we can maintain that through this weekend's series, the Tide would be the first team in NCAA softball history to average over 3,000 fans per game. We have led the nation in attendance the last seven consecutive years and our total attendance has topped 90,000 in three of the last four years. As I mentioned earlier, in addition to Haylie McCleney earning the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, three players recently received CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Haylie joined juniors Chandler Dare and Sydney Littlejohn on the District 4 team. Alabama has qualified at least three student-athletes to the list in four of the last six seasons. This is Haylie's third career honor and the first for Chandler and Sydney.
Men's Tennis
Congratulations to Coach George Husack's emerging program! For the fifth consecutive season, the Tide will be represented in the NCAA singles and doubles championships, this time by sophomore Korey Lovett and freshman Mazen Osama. Korey and Mazen enter the national tournament as a No. 5-8 overall seed, earning them All-America honors. They are the third set of doubles All-Americans in the last four years and the fourth consecutive duo to advance to the NCAA tournament under George's leadership. In addition to competing in doubles, Mazen will be part of the singles tournament as he was chosen as an at-large selection to the field of 64. He is the first Alabama freshman to make the cut since two-time All-American Francisco Rodriguez in 1997.
Women's Tennis
Despite struggling through a tough season, the Tide is sending two players to the NCAA singles championship for only the fifth time in the history of the program, as junior Erin Routliffe and freshman Andie Daniell were both selected. Erin is making her second consecutive appearance in the singles championship after advancing to the round of 32 last year. Andie is the first Crimson Tide freshman to make the cut since Alexa Guarachi in 2010. Alabama has been represented in the NCAA individual tournament in each of the last seven years and both the singles and doubles tournaments in the same season only six times. In 2013, Alexa advanced to the semifinals in singles. The last two years, Erin teamed with Maya Jansen to win the doubles title.
Track & Field
Next week figures to be of historical importance for our the Alabama track and field program as head coach Dan Waters and our athletic department will host the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Sam Bailey Track Complex. Competition will run from Thursday through Saturday, May 12-14. Please plan to attend to support our nationally-competitive program. Some of the marquee event finals are scheduled to run Friday evening with the bulk of the championship finals running from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. The weather should be ideal and the level of competition will be world class. This is definitely an event to come out and watch, particularly in an Olympic year. The Tide men's team remains No. 8 while the women fell one spot to 28th in this week's U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association National Team Rankings released Monday, May 2. The men's team posted 154.92 points while the women scored 65.37 points. In this week's South Region Index, the men moved up from third to second behind Florida while the women remain second behind Florida. The SEC continues to dominate the boards by earning the No. 1 spots on the men's and women's conference Index Top 10 list.
