The Battle Plan

Fitting Honorees as Alabama's 2016 SEC Legends
Every year at the SEC men's and women's basketball tournaments all 14 member schools in the conference recognize one person who has made an impact on the school's athletics programs that will endure long after their presence. This year, Alabama chose to honor our former gymnastics coach, Sarah Patterson, at the women's basketball tournament last week in Jacksonville, Fla., and former men's basketball star Ennis Whatley at the men's tournament last night in Nashville, Tenn. The selection of Sarah and Ennis is especially pleasing to me.
The honor is fitting recognition of the amazing legacy Sarah created here. Very few coaches have had the overall impact, both here in the SEC and nationally, that Sarah did during her nearly four decades as our gymnastics coach. During her legendary 36-year career, she became the first coach in SEC history, regardless of sport, to win NCAA championships in four different decades, leading us to six national titles overall. Sarah and her husband and career-long assistant coach, David, also led the Tide to eight SEC titles and an NCAA-record 29 regional championships. Her gymnasts earned 25 individual NCAA titles, one Honda Cup, eight Honda Awards, 18 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, five NCAA Elite 89 Awards, 302 All-America honors and 201 Scholastic All-America honors.
Just as important, Sarah created an environment of community outreach within her program that was highlighted by her Power of Pink initiative that raised awareness for the fight against breast cancer and became a nation-wide phenomenon. That environment really kick-started the excellent community service ethic that permeates our entire athletics program.
Ennis was a 2015 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inductee. As a player, Ennis earned NABC Second Team All-America honors in 1983 as he averaged 15.2 points per game while leading the Tide to an appearance in the SEC Championship Game and an NCAA Tournament berth. One year earlier, as a junior point guard, Ennis helped Alabama win the 1982 SEC Tournament title and led the Tide to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
Ennis was what you want your point guard to be - a player who makes the rest of the team better. He set the school record for single-season assists with 220 in 1983 - a number that still ranks second-best in Alabama history - and he still owns the school record for career average assists per game at 6.32. Ennis was one of 14 Alabama players to be a first round NBA Draft pick after his selection in the 1983 Draft. His NBA career spanned 10 years with seven different teams and 385 career games.
Both Ennis and Sarah were trailblazers, not only for their respective teams, but for our program. They set a standard of excellence for others to follow, raising the bar for our entire athletics program. I am very gratified to be able to help honor them this month, showing the rest of the league and the nation how proud we are of them.
Basketball Postseason Possibilities
As we enter the final weekend before bids are extended to teams for the men's and women's postseason basketball tournaments, please keep in mind that we may be in line to host at least one (and maybe more) home basketball games over the next week to 10 days. I have been extremely pleased and proud of how Coach Avery Johnson and our team has performed this season, a year in which they were picked to finish at the bottom of the SEC standings yet are now poised, once again, for postseason action. Our women's team, under the steady guidance of Coach Kristy Curry and her staff, has continued to improve with each season and now is in position for postseason play.
If both teams earn bids, it is probable that we will host at least one men's game and, possibly, a women's game as well. Keep an eye on the action this weekend. The men's NCAA Tournament selections will be announced Sunday evening, March 13, beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT on CBS. After the NCAA selections are announced, the NIT will begin announcing its selections over the course of Sunday evening and Sunday night. The women's NCAA Tournament selections will be announced Monday evening via the selection show on ESPN beginning at 6 p.m. CT. After that is concluded, WNIT berths will be announced later that evening.
Keep an eye on rolltide.com, as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds, for the latest information on how things shake out for these two improving teams.
Men's Basketball Team Getting It Done in the Classroom
In the midst of this exciting men's basketball season, a season in which the Tide has earned four wins over top 25 teams to this point, senior Retin Obasohan has emerged as a star, earning first-team All-SEC honors and a place on the SEC All-Defensive team.
Retin has also been a star in the classroom, earning SEC Men's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year honors as well as a place on the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV team. He is the third Alabama student-athlete this academic year to earn SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors for their respective sports this academic year, joining football's Ryan Kelly and soccer's Abby Lutzenkirchen. Retin is the second consecutive Alabama student to earn the honor in men's basketball, following Levi Randolph in 2015. Retin's and Ryan's SEC Scholar Athlete honors marks just the second time in the award's history that the same school has had a student-athlete earn both football and men's basketball honors in the same academic year.
I am very proud of this latest example that success in the classroom is evident across the full spectrum of athletic teams. Retin, who graduated last year and is working on his master's now, isn't the only member of our basketball team getting it done in the classroom. A total of nine of our men carry a grade point average over 3.0 for their career while eight earned GPAs of 3.0 or better in the fall semester. The balance that our young men are showing in helping us get to the next level on the court while maintaining extremely high standards in the classroom is just another reason to be proud of our young people!
Alabama a Vital Part of the SEC Setting Football Home Attendance Mark
Your remarkable, unwavering and passionate support of our athletics programs takes many forms. But the most vital is your attendance at our home events. Obviously, your support for our football program is nationally renowned and visibly evident. That continued to be the case during our amazing 2015 season, when your support once again led to Alabama ranking among the national leaders in football attendance, once again.
For the 11th consecutive season, the Crimson Tide football program ranked among the top 10 nationally in average home game attendance. Averaging 101,112 fans at our seven home games in 2015, we ranked fifth nationally and third in the Southeastern Conference. Six SEC schools ranked in the top 10: Texas A&M (3rd - 103,622), LSU (4th - 102,004), Alabama (5th - 101,112), Tennessee (6th - 100,584), Georgia (8th - 92,746) and Florida (9th - 90,065).
As a whole, the SEC drew an average of 78,630 fans per home game during the 2015 football season to set an all-time conference attendance record, the 18th consecutive season in which the SEC led the nation in average football attendance. The average surpassed the previous record of 77,694 that was set by the SEC in 2014. The SEC drew more than 7.7 million fans to its games in 2015.
The Big Ten (66,008), Big 12 (57,347) Pac-12 (51,880) and Atlantic Coast (49,033) conferences rounded out the top five conferences in attendance. Nationally, the average attendance in all Football Bowl Subdivision games dropped slightly to 43,933 when compared to the average attendance of 44,603 in 2014.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Help Gymnastics Continue its Tradition of Excellence
The Alabama women's gymnastics program is built on a tradition of excellence and a legacy of champions that includes six NCAA championships (including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012) and nine SEC titles (including back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015), having won four of the last seven conference crowns. Alabama gymnastics has earned 33 consecutive NCAA championships berths and won an NCAA-record 30 regional titles. The Crimson Tide has averaged more than 10,000 fans per meet for the last 12 seasons - including more than 12,000 fans the past seven years - while recording 11 sellouts of more than 15,000 in Coleman Coliseum. You can become an integral part of that great tradition by helping head coach Dana Duckworth continue to build on our legacy of excellence with a gift in support of UA Gymnastics today!

Sports Updates
Baseball
Our baseball team is off to an excellent start, winning 10 of its first 12 games! Alabama is in the midst of four games in four days at home after hitting the road for five games last week. The Tide began its five-game road stretch with a midweek win over Troy by a score of 2-1 before traveling to Cary, N.C., for the USA Baseball-Irish Classic. Alabama won three of its four games at the tournament to go 4-1 on the week. The pitching duo of Geoffrey Bramblett and Matt Foster combined to shut out Notre Dame, 4-0, in Friday's tournament opener. Saturday's first game was an 8-4 win over Niagara. The second game on Saturday was a pitcher's duel, as Alabama fell to No. 8 N.C. State, 2-1. The Tide took the early 1-0 lead in the fourth, but the Wolfpack evened the score at 1-1 in the sixth. Two innings later, State struck with a one-out double and a sac fly to score the go-ahead run for the win. The Tide recorded its second shutout of the weekend on Sunday in a 2-0 win over Brown. Starting pitcher Ray Castillo and relievers Brock Love and Kyle Cameron shut out the Bears, with Kyle earning his first career win. The game went into the top of the ninth before a hit-by-pitch and a double put two in scoring position to allow for a Chance Vincent sacrifice fly. He was followed one out later by a Connor Short single to score an insurance run. Thomas Burrows broke the school record for career saves with his 22nd stop and fourth save of the season on March 1 against Troy. Chandler Avant had an excellent week at the plate, leading the Tide in hitting at .353 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and a team-high tying three runs scored. The sophomore also added three walks, a hit by pitch and three stolen bases to his totals. The Tide outscored its opponents, 17-7, over the course of the week while pitchers allowed only four earned runs in 45.0 innings pitched for an excellent 0.80 earned-run average.
Men's Basketball
Coach Avery Johnson's team knocked off Ole Miss last night, 81-73, in the second round of the SEC Tournament in Nashville. Sophomore Riley Norris scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while senior guard Retin Obasohan scored a team-high 17 points, all coming in the second half after Retin had early foul trouble. The Tide advances to tonight's quarterfinal matchup with Kentucky. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT on The SEC Network, or listen in on the radio via the Crimson Tide Sports Network. Retin was named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year and First Team All-SEC, the league office announced earlier this week. In addition, Retin earned a spot on the league's all-defensive team, giving him a trio of conference awards to cap what has been an outstanding senior year. Retin is the third player in program history (the second in as many years) to claim the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, joining former standouts Levi Randolph (2015) and Justin Knox (2009). He also is the second player in program history to be named to both the league's first team and all-defensive team in the same season (Trevor Releford accomplished that feat back in 2013). We are so very proud of Retin for his leadership, work ethic, attitude and the example that he sets.
Women's Basketball
Our women's basketball team got back to work this week, practicing in preparation for a potential trip to the postseason. The selection announcement will be made Monday night, and we are hopeful that Kristy Curry's squad will have a chance to continue its season in the Women's NIT. Should games be played in Tuscaloosa, we'd love to see that electric crowd that the team played in front of all season long, the supporters that played a pivotal role in providing a terrific home court advantage.
Men's Golf
Coach Jay Seawell's fourth-ranked team finished 13th earlier this week at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters with a three-day, 54-hole total of 894 (294-301-299). The Tide entered this week's event having won three consecutive tournaments, but struggled with the course and the conditions throughout the week on the par 72, 7,510-yard course. The 15-team field included nine teams ranked among the current Golfweek Top 20, including five in the top 10 and three in the top five. The Tide will return to the links next weekend when it competes at the Linger Longer Invitational on Sunday through Tuesday, March 20-22, in Greensboro, Ga.
Women's Golf
Coach Mic Potter's team claimed the Tide's second team title of the season last weekend by winning the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Club of Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Tide led wire-to-wire en route to the victory, ending seven strokes ahead of runner-up Virginia. Alabama recorded a 54-hole total of 868 (+16), which included an opening round score of 278 (-6). The field of teams at the event was perhaps the toughest that Mic's team has faced so far this season, as six of the top 10 teams competed. Freshman Cheyenne Knight turned in an even-par 213 to earn medalist honors for the first time in her career. She fired a 4-under 67 in Friday's opening round, the best round of her rookie season. She also earned her second SEC Women's Freshman Golfer of the Week honor earlier this week for her outstanding performance. Cheyenne has played in all six of the Tide's tournaments so far, with every one of her rounds counting toward the team's score.
Gymnastics
Coach Dana Duckworth and her ladies are taking this weekend off from competition, their first break since the season got underway in early January, and the break comes at an excellent time. After competing 11 times in nine weeks, our ladies will have the chance to rest up and recuperate before heading to the SEC Championships in Little Rock, Ark., next week. The Tide finished off the regular season with an uncharacteristic performance in a loss at LSU, where we couldn't overcome a tentative start to the night. But overall, we have had a strong season, ranking fourth in the nation, while posting some of the best event scores in school history on the uneven bars and balance beam. Individually, several of our ladies have scored over 9.95 this season, including Lauren Beers, who earned a perfect 10.0 on the vault against Georgia a few weeks ago. We are the two-time defending SEC champions and I hope you'll support the team in Little Rock on March 19, or you'll be watching via The SEC Network.
Rowing
After taking last weekend off from competition, Coach Larry Davis' team heads to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Cardinal Invitational hosted by the University of Louisville. Two days of racing begin tomorrow morning. This weekend's competition will take place on Melton Hill Lake. The venue is an annual trip for the Crimson Tide and the familiarity should help the team later this season when the Big 12 Championships are held at the same location on May 14-15. The Tide will compete in a split-squad competition next Saturday, March 19, as a handful of boats will travel out to California for the Lake Natoma Regatta while the remaining team members will compete in Tuscaloosa on the Black Warrior River against Drake. Races are set to begin at 9 a.m. CT next Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
Soccer
Congratulations to freshman forward Emma Welch, who has been called up to the United States Women's Soccer Under-19 National Team camp set for March 12-19 in Davis, Calif. The camp will be run by U.S. Soccer Development Coach Jitka Klimkova. All of the players in this age group are eligible for the team that will participate in the 2016 Federation Internationale de Football Association U-20 World Cup to be held in Papua New Guinea in November. Twenty-six players were invited to the camp, which consists of the top female players from the U.S. in the U-19 age group. Emma is the first Crimson Tide soccer player to be featured in a U.S. U-19 camp since Abby Lutzenkirchen was invited to train with the team in 2012. Emma joins a fellow teammate, junior midfielder Celia Jimenez, as the two members of the current Crimson Tide roster that have been invited to train with their national teams in 2016. Emma was named to the 2015 SEC All-Freshman Team, the first Alabama freshman to earn the honor since 2012. She led the team in assists, the most by a freshman in program history, finished the season tied for third in points and tied for fourth on the team in shots. Emma was the only freshman to play in all 19 matches for the Tide.
Softball
Coach Patrick Murphy's fourth-ranked Crimson Tide softball team begins SEC play this weekend in Baton Rouge, facing the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers in a three-game series. Game one is set for a 6 p.m. CT start tonight. Games two (Saturday at 5 p.m. CT) and three (Sunday at 2 p.m. CT) will be aired live on The SEC Network. Inclement weather is in the forecast for the weekend so check RollTide.com and @AlabamaSB on Twitter for the most up-to-date information on any potential schedule changes. This weekend starts an eight-game road swing for the Tide. The team will travel to Fullerton, Calif., next weekend for the Easton Tournament starting on Thursday, March 17. The Tide will return home to face Alcorn State on Tuesday, March 22, before hosting Missouri that weekend. The Tide enters SEC play with a 21-2 record, its best start since going 22-1 to open the 2013 season. Alabama has outscored its opponents 167-41 and collected four wins over ranked opponents.
Swimming and Diving
Coach Dennis Pursley's program has had a combined 21 swimmers and divers earn spots in the upcoming NCAA Championships between our men's and women's teams - Alabama's largest representation at the NCAA meet in more than 25 years. A total of 14 men earned spots at the national championships, including 12 swimmers - eight of which earned berths in individual events and four that will compete solely on relays - and two divers. Kristian Gkolomeev, a two-time NCAA champion in the sprint events, and Connor Oslin, a two-time SEC backstroke champion, will lead our men's squad along with fellow All-Americans Brett Walsh, Luke Kaliszak and Anton McKee. The men's championships will be held March 23-26 in Atlanta, Ga. First, though, our women will compete at the NCAA meet in Atlanta next Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19. Among our seven women's participants, four will swim individual events with three more competing on relays. Emma Saunders, Bridget Blood and Mia Nonnenberg are all making return trips to nationals. Coach Pursley's team has been on the rise these last three years and I can't wait to see what they accomplish on the sport's biggest stage outside of the Olympic Games.
Men's Tennis
Coach George Husack's team went 1-1 during its SEC opening weekend with a 5-2 win at South Carolina and a 6-1 loss at No. 16 Georgia. The victory in Friday's match against the Gamecocks was our first in a league opener since the 2009 season. Freshman Mazen Osama continued his solid singles play, going 2-0 with a 6-4, 7-5 win to clinch the match against South Carolina and a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory over 21st-ranked Wayne Montgomery of Georgia on Sunday. The wins helped Mazen jump to No. 62 in the latest national rankings, while sophomore Korey Lovett moved up to No. 81. The two also entered the doubles rankings together at No. 42. I know our team is looking forward to playing at home this weekend after over a month away. First up is Tennessee today at 5 p.m. CT, while Sunday will feature a doubleheader against Kentucky and The Citadel, beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
Women's Tennis
Coach Jenny Mainz's team opened conference play last weekend with two tough home losses. On Thursday, the Crimson Tide dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 9 LSU in a match that lasted more than three hours. After the Tide won the doubles point, the Tigers rallied to win four of the six singles courts to clinch the victory. On Saturday, the Tide lost to No. 14 Texas A&M, 4-1. Junior Erin Routliffe went 2-0 in singles on the weekend at the second spot, defeating LSU's 48th-ranked Jessica Golovin and Texas A&M's Rachel Pierson. Those results moved Erin back into the national top 100 rankings at 85th, while our outstanding freshman, Andie Daniell, moved up seven spots in the national rankings to 31st. Andie and Erin are also ranked nationally together in doubles, coming in at No. 32 this week. The team is on the road this weekend, taking on No. 3 Georgia today at 3 p.m. CT and Tennessee on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
Track and Field
Coach Dan Waters has two athletes heading to Birmingham this weekend to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships held today and tomorrow at the CrossPlex in Birmingham. Head out to see some great action and support the Tide! Junior Jeremiah Green is set to take part in the men's triple jump while junior Quanesha Burks will look to add another NCAA title to her resume in the women's long jump. Jeremiah comes in with the nation's second-best mark in the triple jump thanks to his leap of 54 feet, 8 3/4 inches that broke the school record in the event. He finished fourth at the SEC Indoor Championships with a best effort of 52-10 3/4. Quanesha is tied for No. 1 on the NCAA long jump list after winning the SEC title with a jump of 22-1 3/4, which broke the school record she set earlier in the season. It was also Quanesha's first conference title indoors. In the team standings at the SEC Indoor Championships, the Crimson Tide men tied for sixth with 49 points and the women placed eighth with 43 points. A total of 35 of the men's points were scored in the field events while the women grabbed at least one point in 13 of 17 events overall. Six Alabama men earned spots on the Men's All-SEC Second Team - junior Payton Ballard, junior Robbie Farnham-Rose, junior Kyle Felpel, senior Justin Fondren, senior Andrew Harris and junior Jacopo Lahbi. Quanesha secured a spot on the Women's All-SEC First Team while freshmen Claire Orcel and Rachael Reddy were named to the All-Freshman Team.
