The Battle Plan

Opening Weekend a Smashing Success
The Grand Opening of the new Sewell-Thomas Stadium last Friday night was spectacular. The weatherman cooperated completely and a near 70-degree night in February was a sign that things would go well. The game was a sellout, as was the game on Saturday. Excitement filled the air on all fronts.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the Baseball Steering Committee, President Dr. Stuart R. Bell, and our Trustees signaled the beginning of a new era in Alabama baseball. Foots Parnell, grandson of former Alabama baseball head coach Joe Sewell, threw out the first pitch, and the game began against the University of Maryland, a nationally-respected program coming off two consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearances. Maryland's starting pitcher in the opener is rated as one of the top prospects expected to go in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft.
The right field zone reserved for students was full. They were loud and proud and, as always, provided energy to the entire stadium - even from afar. The full house proved that there is not a bad seat in the stadium.
The left field area was designed to attract families and it was so cool to see how many children showed up for the game. Jumping booths and a baseball pitching booth were filled most of the night. Many rolled down the grass berm and had their gloves just in case a foul ball came their way. The playground stayed full pretty much all night with climbing and spinning taking place among much joy and laughter.
The .525 Club honoring Dave Magadan's 1983 batting average was rocking. Fans could enjoy reserved seats outside along the first base side that are under the roof. If weather, or the need to eat or drink caused them to get up, they were only a few steps away from a full bar, a popcorn machine and wooden cartons of fresh roasted peanuts. A buffet food line served various hot delicacies, along with another area for snacks and desserts. Just outside the door were hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill with warm buns and all the fixings nearby.
Much of the same is available in the Home Plate Club. Many believe that seats behind home plate are the prime seats in any stadium. Our seats are pretty darned good and, from these outside seats, there is easy access into the Home Plate Club for food, drink and restrooms.
The opener went our way as the Crimson Tide beat the Terrapins, 3-1. A neat milestone was passed in the first inning as Tide freshman Chandler Taylor, in his first at-bat in the new Sewell-Thomas Stadium, hit a home run. Chandler's hit will go down in history as the first hit and the first run scored in the new facility. Alabama won the series with a 5-1 victory on Sunday after falling short on Saturday. The first official weekend of play in the new Joe was a resounding success.
There are too many people to thank in this short space, but I would be remiss if I didn't thank Mal Moore, my longtime friend, teammate, and predecessor for his vision for Alabama Athletics, which included a rebuilt Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The University leadership under Dr. Bob Witt, Dr. Judy Bonner, and now Dr. Stuart Bell, along with the Trustees, has been extremely supportive of athletics, in general, and the new baseball stadium, in particular.
Paul Bryant, Jr. and Karen Brooks were instrumental in the design of the new stadium. Paul has great knowledge of baseball stadiums and history and had a significant influence on what the stadium is today. Karen also added much to the design and also kept us in sync with University standards and policies.
Finus Gaston and Brandon Sevedge, and their most competent staffs, were responsible for oversight and execution of the plan. They did a marvelous job working with Geoff Clever with Davis Architects and Matt Rabren with Rabren Construction to end up with the finished product of which we are so proud.
Hats off as well to Coach Mitch Gaspard and our baseball team, who had to play all of their games during 2015 away from home. They practiced at home but, more often than not, there was heavy equipment or materials in some parts of the field that rarely allowed them to practice on an unobstructed field.
Most of all, I want to thank the fans. Alabama has the best in the country, and I've seen a lot of places. I appreciate our sellouts on Friday and Saturday in the stadium, and our students packing the right field zone. Fan support means so much to all our teams and you do help provide the winning edge.
It is my hope that those who have not been to the stadium yet can come to a game, take a tour, and see all of the seating areas available. There is not a better college baseball stadium in the country and it is one in which we all can be proud.
And, finally, thanks to all who have contributed to the stadium building fund and those who have helped raise money. We still have a ways to go to get to our needed contributions level, but we have a solid start and I'm confident that we'll get there.
Women's Basketball's Monumental Win Continues Hoops Momentum
Congratulations to Kristy Curry and our women's basketball team for defeating Tennessee on Thursday night for the first time in 32 years! Special thanks to our seniors, Nikki Hegstetter and Khadijah Carter, for their leadership in getting this milestone win in their last game at home. Our team has played hard all year and is sound in fundamentals. We have a young team and a good recruiting class should put Alabama higher in the mix in the run for the SEC championship.
We're not there yet, but Kristy and her staff are definitely on the right track. I'm very proud of them and I know from your increasing presence in Foster Auditorium that you are, too. We wish them well in the SEC Tournament next week in Jacksonville, Florida. SEC, NCAA and NIT Tournaments are coming up and our goal in all sports is to make it to postseason play. Once we get there, anything can happen!
Men's Basketball in the Stretch Run
Our men's basketball team is also headed into its stretch run with Auburn and Arkansas at home, and Georgia in Athens next week. Coach Avery Johnson has had our team playing hard and up to its potential all season. We've won big games on the road and our RPI is among the best in the league. With two tough losses behind us after a run of five straight SEC wins, we need to get back on track with our games Saturday against Auburn and next Wednesday night against Arkansas.
The Auburn game is sold out and I know our fans will provide that competitive advantage we need to get a victory against our cross-state rival. Let's also fill up the arena for our game next Wednesday against Arkansas and send a strong message to Avery and this team about how proud we are of the foundation they have laid for the future of Alabama basketball this year.
This weekend is jam packed with great athletic competition in Tuscaloosa. Today our softball team plays Arizona at 6 p.m., baseball takes on North Dakota at 6:30 p.m. and gymnastics hosts Georgia at 7:30 p.m. Saturday features softball against Arizona at 1:30 p.m., baseball versus North Dakota at 2 p.m., and men's basketball taking on Auburn at 4 p.m. On Sunday, softball plays Tennessee and baseball plays North Dakota, with both games beginning at 1 p.m. This is a great weekend to take your children and grandchildren to see world class athletics in action in a variety of sports.
Murphy Achieves 900th Career Victory as Head Coach
Congratulations to Coach Patrick Murphy! Patrick recently surpassed the 900-victory mark as a head coach - a tremendous accomplishment in any sport. With a 10-5 victory over Maryland on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Panther Invitational in Miami, Patrick ran his record to 900-242 (.788) record at Alabama in his 18th season at the helm of the program. From meager beginnings, Patrick has built a program that achieves excellence in all facets - athletically, academically, and in the community. He, and his staff, are the best of the best.
Fulfilling the Mission: Swimming & Diving Teams Achieving Excellence
After a week that that saw Coach Dennis Pursley's swimmers and divers post so many great performances in the pool at the SEC Championships (see in Sports Updates below), including another individual SEC title for junior Connor Oslin, I think it's important to point out that our men's and women's swimming and diving teams are just as accomplished in the classroom. Connor, for instance, carries a 3.9 cumulative grade point average while pursuing a pre-med degree. Overall, of the 44 swimmers and divers that competed at last week's SEC Championships, 12 earned a 4.0, 26 earned a 3.5 or better and 34 earned a 3.0 or better GPA during the fall 2015 semester. Overall, nine of the swimmers who competed at the conference meet carry a cumulative GPA of 4.0 while 27 carry a 3.5 or better, and 33 carry a 3.0 or better GPA. As a team, our women posted the sixth-highest team grade point average among all NCAA Division I women's teams in the fall with a 3.61 and is ranked No. 1 among SEC schools while posting the highest team GPA among those schools that scored at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Our men also ranked in the top 10, in terms of team grade point average this fall, coming in at No. 7 among all NCAA Division I men's teams after posting a 3.38. The Tide men also led the SEC, in terms of team GPA, and were the only team in the nation to finish in the top 10 at last year's NCAA Championships and in the top 10 by team GPA this fall. This kind of balanced excellence between athletics and academics is why I truly believe we are enjoying a golden age as a department.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Help Softball Remain Ahead of the Pack
In today's world of collegiate athletics, few can claim to have been at a program since the beginning. Crimson Tide head softball coach Patrick Murphy has been present from the very inception of our softball program, and has led the team to become one of the most consistently successful programs in the nation. From a humble start to a national championship, Patrick has taken Alabama to the top of the college softball world. Additionally, Alabama has become a regular atop the nation's attendance standings, with an ever-growing group of loyal fans who fill the stands at Rhoads Stadium throughout the season. Under Coach Murphy's leadership, the 2016 season is off to another exciting start. Ranked No. 4 nationally, Alabama softball shutout Troy in the home opener on Wednesday evening, bringing the season's record to 11-1. Show your support for Coach Murphy and Alabama softball by cheering them on at Rhoads Stadium and by making a gift toward their operating needs! Give Now!

Sports Updates
Baseball
The Crimson Tide won its opening series inside the newly renovated Sewell-Thomas Stadium last weekend, taking two of three games against Maryland. Our fan support was tremendous! We had sellouts on both Friday and Saturday with more than 600 standing-room only seats sold on Saturday. On the field, our younger players are making an immediate impact. Freshmen and sophomores contributed 20 of the team's 24 hits over the weekend, including all eight extra-base hits. Freshman Cobie Vance led the team with six hits, including a double and home run, highlighted by a 4-for-5 day on Saturday with his first career home run. Freshman Chandler Taylor homered in his first at-bat as a member of the Crimson Tide, the first freshman to homer in his first at-bat since 1999, and the first hit in the new ballpark. Chandler continued to swing a hot bat with a perfect 5-for-5 on the night in a 13-1 win over Nicholls State on Wednesday night. His five hits matched the Alabama record for hits in a game while his three runs scored led the team. Six other players finished with multi-hit outings in the Nicholls State game including Georgie Salem, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a team-best three runs batted in.
Men's Basketball
The Tide begins a two-game home stand - it's final two home contests of the regular season - against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday at 4 p.m., followed by hosting Arkansas Wednesday on Senior Night at 8 p.m. Both games will air on SEC Network and will also be available on the radio via the Crimson Tide Sports Network. Saturday's game vs. Auburn is sold out, marking the fifth home sellout of the season, the most games sold out in a single season at Alabama since selling out six during the 2006-07 season. Through 13 home games during Coach Avery Johnson's first year, we are averaging 13,057 fans per game, ranking fourth in the SEC. We are on pace to have the highest single-season per game attendance average in program history. We enter the Auburn game with an RPI of 43 and a strength of schedule (SOS) of 19th in the nation, according to ESPN.com (through games of Feb. 24). The RPI ranks fifth in the SEC, while the SOS is second-best in the league. Alabama ranks second in the SEC with 5 wins vs. teams ranked in the RPI top 50, and we lead the SEC in league strength of schedule (as of Feb. 24). Our SEC opponents have a combined winning percentage of .602 (247-163) as of Feb. 24. Our outstanding senior guard, Retin Obasohan, has been making his case for first team all-conference honors. Against league competition, Retin is averaging 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 50.5 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from three-point range through 15 league games. He enters the Auburn contest ranking fourth in scoring average, fifth in field goal percentage and tied for sixth in steals per game. Retin has had nine games in SEC play scoring 20 or more points and has scored in double figures in all but one game in conference play.
Women's Basketball
What an exciting Senior Night it was last night at Foster Auditorium as we beat Tennessee for the first time since March 3, 1984, and the first time at home in program history. As Coach Kristy Curry said, "That's how a team is supposed to play on Senior Night." Alabama's defense was the story of the night, holding the Lady Volunteers to 26.1 percent shooting for the game. The Tide will finish up its regular season schedule on Sunday at No. 16 Mississippi State before heading to Jacksonville, Fla., next week for the SEC Tournament. With last night's win Alabama is guaranteed to finish at .500 or better, qualifying the Tide for the postseason for the first time under Coach Curry and her staff. It has been a long building process for Kristy and her program. We should all be very proud of the progress made to this point, and recognize the significance of last night's victory and the postseason potential ahead.
Men's Golf
Our men's golf team, ranked No. 5 in one survey and 13th in another, picked up right where it left off last fall, winning its third straight tournament by claiming the Puerto Rico Classic title on Tuesday behind a three-day, 54-hole total of 25-under par 839 (276-287-276). Coach Jay Seawell's team cruised to a nine-stroke victory at the event and third straight team title after it ended the fall season with wins at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. It marked the Crimson Tide's fifth Puerto Rico Classic title in the last six years and the sixth in the last nine years. The Tide was led by junior Robby Shelton, who fired a 7-under par 65 during Tuesday's final 18 holes and claimed medalist honors with a tournament total of 11-under par 205 (70-70-65). Robby, who was recently named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, captured his third tournament title this season (DICK's Collegiate Challenge Cup and Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate) and the sixth of his career, which matches the school record held by Justin Thomas. Sophomore Jonathan Hardee, who was the clubhouse leader after 36 holes, finished runner-up in Puerto Rico. Jonathan not only earned a career-best finish, but also carded the lowest 54-hole tournament total during his time at Alabama, as he closed play one stroke back of Robby with a 10-under par 206 (67-70-69).
Women's Golf
Coach Mic Potter's team continues to play well this season, finishing third at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship in New Orleans earlier this week. The event featured six of the nation's top 15 teams. The Crimson Tide shot a 4-over 292 in the opening round, but responded with consecutive rounds of even par to end with a 54-hole total of 868. On the individual leaderboard, seniors Emma Talley and Janie Jackson both recorded top-10 finishes. Talley fired a 4-under 212 to tie for third overall while Jackson carded a 2-under 214 to tie for seventh. Sophomore Nicole Morales made her spring debut and, after struggling in the first two rounds, she came through with a team-best 69 in Tuesday's final round to help the Tide hold off Arizona for third place.
Gymnastics
Coach Dana Duckworth and her No. 3-ranked ladies are coming off a stellar road performance, scoring a 197.3 to win the Penn State Quad meet in State College, Pa., where they posted the best uneven bars score in the nation this season with a 49.6. That outstanding score included 9.975s from sophomores Kiana Winston and Mackenzie Brannan. It was our third 197-plus score in a row, after posting a 197.25 in a loss at then-No. 8 Auburn on Feb. 12 and a 197.375 in a win over West Virginia on Valentine's Day. Tonight, our gymnasts, return to Coleman Coliseum for our final regular-season home meet against No. 10 Georgia. It is also a night of celebration as we honor the senior All-America duo of Lauren Beers and Carley Sims, who helped lead us to back-to-back SEC Championships as sophomores and juniors. Friday is also the start of Alabama Gymnastics' Alumni Night as those who built, maintained, and grew Alabama gymnastics' tradition of excellence and legacy of champions return to Coleman Coliseum to cheer on the current team. As part of Friday night's festivities, we'll honor our 1991 and 1996 NCAA Championship teams as they celebrate their 25th and 20th anniversaries, respectively. This alumni weekend will be extra special for Dana, who was a sophomore on the 1991 NCAA Championship team. We hope everyone will join us in Coleman Coliseum for this special night.
Rowing
Coach Larry Davis's rowing team begins its spring racing season this weekend against Eastern Michigan Saturday at 9 a.m. on the Black Warrior River. Fans can watch the action at the Park at Manderson Landing and admission is free. Instead of the typical 2,000-meter distance seen in most spring races, the Tide and Eastern Michigan will be racing a number of 1,000-meter pieces. This will allow fans to see more races with a quicker turnaround time between races, making for a more fast-paced environment than most typical regattas. This is the first of three home regattas that we will host this season, more opportunities than ever to watch our team this spring. The team will return home on March 19 to face Drake and Jacksonville and again on April 30 to face SMU. Following Saturday's races, fans will have an opportunity to tour the team's new boathouse and ask any questions they might have about the space, the equipment, or rowing in general. The boathouse will be open to the public from 11-11:30 a.m.
Softball
The Tide has won 10 straight games as it enters this weekend with an 11-1 record to start the season. The Tide hosts a trio of talented teams at this weekend's Easton Bama Bash, including Marshall, 14th-ranked Tennessee and 15th-ranked Arizona. The team will celebrate Andrea Hawkins' senior day this Saturday, as the Bay City, Texas, native will welcome a large contingent of family and friends to Tuscaloosa. This season, Hawkins leads the team with a .500 batting average and is currently on a career best 10-game hitting streak. Speed and aggressive base running are big points of emphasis for the team this season, as Alabama leads the SEC in stolen bases (29) and steal attempts (33). Nine different players have earned at least one stolen base, which puts a lot of pressure on opposing defenses when nearly anyone in the Alabama lineup is a threat to steal. At its current pace, the Tide is projected to finish the regular season with 135 stolen bases, which would be the eighth-highest mark in program history. Our pitchers have been equally effective, throwing a pair of no-hitters last week against UAB and Mercer. That's the first time since 2009 that multiple no-hitters have been thrown in the same week by Tide pitchers and, coupled with the three no-hitters from last year, marks the first back-to-back seasons with multiple no-hitters since 2008-09.
Swimming and Diving
Coach Dennis Pursley and our men's and women's swimming and diving teams produced some outstanding results at last week's SEC Championships. Our men moved up a spot from last season to fourth place in the final team standings, holding off a late run by host school Missouri, while our women finished 10th. Junior Connor Oslin led the way for the men, repeating as the SEC 100 backstroke champion. He also moved up to second in the 200 backstroke with a new school record. Our men also took the bronze medal in the 200 and 400 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Junior Bridget Blood paced the women's team with a bronze medal finish in the 100 breaststroke. She also combined with senior Emma Saunders and sophomores Hannah Musser and Temarie Tomley to set a new school record in the 400 medley relay. This weekend, several of our swimmers are in Athens, Ga., at the Bulldog Invite, looking to post some best times as we continue deeper into the championship portion of the season.
Men's Tennis
Coach George Husack's team is off to a 7-4 start this season after a 4-3 loss at Michigan last weekend. In the latest ITA rankings, Alabama has three players in the collegiate national singles standings, including freshman Mazen Osama at No. 56, senior Becker O'Shaughnessey at No. 100 and sophomore Korey Lovett at No. 107. Becker leads the Tide in singles victories thus far in dual match play with seven, while Mazen, a two-time SEC Freshman of the Week, follows just behind with six. The team continues its season this weekend in Montgomery at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
Women's Tennis
Coach Jenny Mainz's women's tennis team got back in the win column last Sunday, earning a hard-fought 5-2 victory over then-No. 26 Northwestern at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. After winning in both singles and doubles against the Wildcats, freshman Andie Daniell was named the SEC Women's Tennis Freshman Player of the Week. Andie, with doubles partner Erin Routliffe, secured the doubles point on Sunday by beating the ninth-ranked pair in the nation and Andie also collected a 7-5, 6-3 decision against Maddie Lipp, who came into the match ranked 51st. Andie is now ranked 38th in the nation in singles while she and Erin have moved up to 20th in doubles. The team has played six matches so far this season, with all six coming against nationally-ranked opponents. In addition to the victory over Northwestern, Jenny's squad has also defeated No. 58 Texas and No. 65 Penn. This weekend the women have joined the men in Montgomery for the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. The Tide are two-time defending champions at the event.
Track & Field
Head coach Dan Waters' track & field squads are in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for the SEC Indoor Championships, where a total of 48 athletes will represent the Crimson Tide. Both the men and the women have a number of athletes ranked in the top 10 of the conference in their respective events. The men are led by junior triple jumper Jeremiah Green, who broke the school record in the event earlier this season. He is currently second in the nation and tied for eighth in the world in the indoor long jump. Junior Robbie Farnham-Rose is third in the mile and eighth in the 3,000 meters in the conference, while four shot putters rank 10th or better. For the women, junior long jumper Quanesha Burks, the defending NCAA outdoor long jump champion, has been the headliner. In her first meet of the season, Quanesha set a school record in the indoor long jump to go along with her outdoor long jump record set last spring. The Hartselle, Ala., native is the top athlete in the women's long jump going into the SEC Championships. Senior Katelyn Greenleaf and redshirt freshman Rachael Reddy are in the top 10 in the conference in both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.
