The Battle Plan

A New Era in Baseball and on the Hardwood
Last Saturday was a very good day for Alabama Athletics. The morning started off with the first official event (not the grand opening, which will come February 19) in the rebuilt Sewell-Thomas Stadium. It was a roaring success.
Coach Mitch Gaspard and staff invited all former Alabama baseball players and coaches to come see the stadium, and those who felt the urge could take batting practice and even play in an alumni game against our current team. More than 200 former players and coaches from all eras returned and enjoyed one more time on the diamond. All eras were represented. It was really special to see several from my time on campus.
George Howell (1949-51), a decorated World War II veteran and member of the 1950 team that won the SEC championship and went to the College World Series, took the first swing in the cage to start the day's events. Others attendees included Chicago White Sox catcher Alex Avila (2006-08), major leaguer Tommy Hunter (2006-07), Alabama's all-time winningest coach Jim Wells, and former Golden Spikes winner and current Arizona Diamondbacks hitting coach Dave Magadan (1981-83).
It was a pleasure to visit with Dave and members of his family in the 525 Club, one of our two premium seating arenas in the new stadium. Dave's batting average his last year at Alabama of .525 is something special and an accomplishment that we want everyone to remember in our prestigious baseball history. Many others are honored in significant ways throughout the stadium and many more will be recognized in the future.
There were big smiles throughout the day from players and players' families as they marveled at the player and fan amenities throughout the stadium. It was so neat to see teammates finding other teammates, taking pictures and reminiscing. I wasn't around during most of their careers, but it didn't take long to determine that many of the stories were being seriously embellished. It also didn't take long to learn there were "characters" on pretty much every team who kept the team loose.
Congrats and thanks to Coach Gaspard and his staff, the Baseball Steering Committee, Earl Griffin (a member of the Baseball Committee) and many others who made this day special. The goal was to reconnect former players from all eras with current players, staff and the University of Alabama baseball program. Those goals were met and exceeded. The comment that I heard that summed up the day, in my mind, was, "Today was the biggest day in Alabama baseball in decades!" Congrats to all who took part.
Before the Alumni Baseball reunion was over, our men's basketball team tipped off in Coleman Coliseum before a sellout crowd against Missouri. That crowd was a huge factor in the game and responded like we hoped they would in making Coleman a difficult place to play in for our opponents. Our team played very well, building a 20+ point lead in the second half. Missouri fought back and closed the gap in the final moments, but the Tide won, 80-71. It capped off a terrific day at The University of Alabama.
On Wednesday at Coleman Coliseum our men's basketball team tipped off before another sellout crowd against the 15th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies. A&M has been highly ranked all season and possesses a very talented team. They came in hungry for a road win in our house. Our team and our crowd would not allow that to happen.
This team has turned heads all season from friends and foes alike with its blue collar work ethic and the passion and energy they bring every game. It is so much fun to watch this team and, whether shots are falling or not, they are diving after loose balls, sprinting up and down the court playing great defense, and running very disciplined offensive patterns.
Every member of the team is contributing. It is really good to see our entire team getting better every week. We have not had great luck with injuries. Our schedule, particularly early, wasn't all that favorable. But, through it all, opposing teams are learning that if you are going to beat Alabama, you'd better bring your lunch!
There is good leadership on this team and it is good to see our younger, less experienced players stepping up and beginning to play like veterans. This was our sixth one-possession game of the season and we are 5-1 in those contests. We outrebounded A&M, the 10th time we have done that this season. We are 9-1 in those games. We also had a season-record 12 steals in this contest.
Both teams played hard, we led by 58-47 with nine minutes to go. A&M closed the gap to 63-62 with seconds to play and an excellent Aggie shooter made it to the free throw line with two shots. That may have been when our crowd was at its all-time loudest - and you know the rest of the story. Alabama enjoyed another win over a highly ranked team, 63-62.
A good friend of mine told me when he was walking out of the arena, one of our fans wiped his brow and said, "Man, we were lucky to win that one!" My friend, who is a very knowledgeable basketball fan replied, "But the most important thing to take away from this game is that we were in position when luck mattered!" And that is what Coach Avery Johnson and his staff have done so well as the season has progressed - putting our players in position to be successful.
We have another big game tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. CT on The SEC Network against the Florida Gators, who are currently tied for 4th in the SEC. Another tough SEC road game awaits. If you can't be there - tune in and send positive vibes our team's way.
Fulfilling the Mission: Impressive Team and Individual GPAs from the Fall Semester
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you probably recall that I have previously mentioned how well our teams did in the classroom during the fall semester just past, as 13 of our programs earned better than a 3.0 team grade point average, including six earning better than a 3.5 GPA. With team GPAs like that, it's obvious that our students did very well academically on an individual basis. A total of 381 of our student-athletes (62 percent) earned a 3.0 or better grade point average in the fall, including 244 (39 percent) who earned a place on the Dean's List with a GPA of 3.5 or better. I was also impressed to learn that 79 of our students (12 percent) earned 4.0 grade point averages, earning a place on the President's List. We are very proud of all our student-athletes as they continue to strive for excellence academically and athletically.
Speaking of individual achievement, Retin Obasohan, who earlier this week helped lead our men's basketball team to a win over nationally-ranked Texas A&M, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team, which propels him onto the national Academic All-America ballot. Retin is the third Alabama men's basketball player to earn first team academic all-district honors, joining Terrance Meade (2003) and the great Levi Randolph (2013, 2014 and 2015) who became our first men's basketball Academic All-American last season. After earning his bachelor's degree in finance last May, Retin is currently pursuing a masters in marketing. Obviously, I join Coach Avery Johnson in expressing how proud we are of Retin and all that he's accomplished both on and off the court.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Sewell-Thomas Stadium
We are one week away from the inaugural game in the new Sewell-Thomas Stadium! This is an incredibly exciting time for Alabama baseball. We have seen a surge in interest surrounding this season including a wonderful Alumni Game last week that saw 200 former players come back to Tuscaloosa. The new "Joe" has provided Alabama baseball with the home it needs and deserves. The design enhances the game day experience for players, fans and VIPs. The stadium features three levels (field, concourse, and luxury) and includes a large canopy, new concession areas, a team store, skyboxes, clubs, a new press box and an Alabama Baseball Hall of Fame. Additionally, a free-standing batting facility and a new family area complete with playground and outfield gathering areas will provide better entertainment value and a baseball atmosphere for our fans and their families. This facility has put the spotlight back on Alabama's oldest sport and will serve as a vital recruiting tool for Coach Mitch Gaspard. As you can imagine, this impressive new facility comes with a hefty price tag. Of the approximate $42 million cost, the Crimson Tide Foundation has been tasked with raising $20 million through private donor support. We are currently just over 49 percent to that goal. For more information about how to support this project, please visit the Foundation's website. There are also still opportunities for season tickets, including Club level seats.

Sports Updates
Men's Basketball
Our men's basketball team has won four of the last five games after a 63-62 win over No. 15 Texas A&M Wednesday night in Coleman Coliseum. In 12 home games during Coach Avery Johnson's first year, we have had three sellouts and we are averaging 12,863 fans per game, which ranks fourth in the SEC. That attendance average is on pace to rank as the highest single-season per game average in program history. In addition, we have sold out a total of four games (including our upcoming game with Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 27), the first time that our men's basketball team has had four or more sellouts in the same season since 2010-11. Our senior guard, Retin Obasohan, was named the SEC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 20.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists a game last week in wins over Mississippi State and Missouri. Retin, who also earned the weekly honor for the week of Dec. 14, became the first Alabama men's basketball player to earn the recognition twice in the same season since Kennedy Winston did so during the 2004-05 season. The game with A&M on Wednesday night was our sixth against a ranked opponent this season and we have gone 4-2 in those games. We also have faced three other opponents who were receiving votes to be ranked at game time (Dayton, Oregon and at South Carolina), making nine of our 23 opponents this season ranked or receiving votes in the AP top 25 poll when the game took place.
Women's Basketball
With the regular season winding down there are only two more opportunities to see our women's basketball team in action in Foster Auditorium this season, and we hope you'll join us as we have big games coming up with nationally-ranked South Carolina on Monday, Feb. 22, and Tennessee on Thursday, Feb. 25. Our fans have done an outstanding job all year long making Foster Auditorium one of the best home court advantages in the nation and continuing that trend in these upcoming games is vital to our team. The game against Tennessee on Feb. 25 will serve as Senior Night, where the team will recognize its senior student-athletes, Khadijah Carter and Nikki Hegstetter, and three student managers. The ceremony will take place before the game and a special tribute video will follow once the game has finished.
Men's Golf
Robby Shelton is one of 25 collegiate golfers named to the 2016 Ben Hogan Award Watch List, which was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday. This is the ninth consecutive year that at least one Crimson Tide player has earned a spot on the watch list for the most prestigious award in men's college golf. The Hogan Award is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the preceding 12 months. This marks the third consecutive year that Robby has been named to the watch list. He joins Bud Cauley (2009, 2010 and 2011) and Bobby Wyatt (2011, 2013 and 2014) as the only Alabama golfers be named to the list three times. Bud is the only member of the Crimson Tide to have been named a Hogan Award semifinalist three times. Robby enters the 2016 spring season ranked No. 4 in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Player Rankings following an outstanding fall season in which he won two of the four tournaments he played. He leads our team with a 68.83 per round stroke average. The Tide begins the 2016 spring season next Saturday-Monday (Feb. 21-23) at the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico.
Women's Golf
Coach Mic Potter's team began the spring season in impressive fashion, placing second at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, a tournament that featured nine of the top 15 ranked teams in the country. The Tide fired a 6-under 278 in Sunday's opening round, their best round of the 2015-16 season, but came up just short in the end as Washington claimed the team title. Senior Janie Jackson recorded the best individual finish, tying for runner-up honors after shooting a 1-under 212, the best 54-hole total of her career. Sophomore Lakareber Abe tied for fourth with a total of 214 (+1), while freshman Cheyenne Knight tied for eighth thanks to a score of 215 (+2). Cheyenne was second among all freshmen in the field, earning SEC Women's Freshman Golfer of the Week for her efforts. All 12 of her rounds have counted toward the team score and she has placed in the top 20 of all four events this season, including two top-10 finishes.
Gymnastics
This weekend will be another busy one for Coach Dana Duckworth's No. 4 ranked team. Tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m., we face No. 8 Auburn in Auburn Arena. If you're in the Auburn area, I encourage you to lend your crimson and white support and, if you're not, the meet will be broadcast live on The SEC Network. Two days later, Dana and her ladies return home to take on West Virginia in a rare Sunday afternoon meet in Coleman Coliseum starting at 3 p.m. featuring Big Al's Carnival on the concourse. There will be several pre-meet entertainment options, including a variety of carnival inspired games and activities. Arrive early to take part in all the festivities. Tickets for Sunday's meet are only $1 and may be purchased online at RollTide.com, or through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum. Last Friday night, 14,870 pink-clad fans filled Coleman Coliseum to watch the Tide beat No. 25 Kentucky in our 12th annual Power of Pink meet. The crowd was the 12th largest in Alabama and SEC gymnastics history. Coming into Sunday's meet against West Virginia, the Crimson Tide is averaging 12,717 fans at home, which also leads the SEC by a large margin - thanks to all of you and your strong support.
Softball
Coach Patrick Murphy's team opens the 2016 season this weekend in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Knights Invitational. We will play Fordham, No. 17 UCF, Rutgers, No. 19 James Madison and Liberty starting this afternoon at 1 p.m. ET with a matchup with Fordham followed at 5:30 p.m. ET with a game with UCF. This will be the first time since 2003 we have played more than one ranked opponent on our opening weekend and will be the eighth time that the Tide has faced at least one ranked opponent to start the season. Three of this weekend's opponents (Fordham, UCF and James Madison) made the 2015 NCAA tournament. This season's schedule includes 34 games against 16 teams that made the 2015 postseason. The Tide returns 12 players from last season, including four All-Americans: senior Haylie McCleney, junior Marisa Runyon and sophomores Alexis Osorio and Demi Turner. The Tide also welcomes six newcomers to the team.
Swimming and Diving
After finishing the regular season with a decisive win over Georgia Tech, Coach Dennis Pursley takes our men's and women's swimming and diving squads to Columbia, Mo., for the SEC Championships next Tuesday through Saturday (Feb. 16-20). Last season, our men and women combined to win five individual SEC titles and two relay crowns. On the men's side, every one of those individual and relay champions from a year ago are back and Coach Pursley has added talent throughout the lineup. The women have also continued to improve with a combination of veterans like senior Emma Saunders, who broke two school records during the regular season, and several talented rookies breaking into the SEC championships lineup. Coach Pursley and associate head coach Jonty Skinner know a little something about what it takes to be successful at these championships. Dennis won the SEC 200 breaststroke during his Crimson Tide career while Jonty, who once held the world record in the 100-meter freestyle, won six SEC titles during his time wearing the crimson and white of Alabama. After back-to-back seasons in which our men and women have gotten faster by leaps and bounds, I'm excited to see what this year's SEC Championships have in store.
Men's Tennis
Our men's tennis team had some great performances at home last weekend, winning two of three matches. We had quite a battle with fifth-ranked Oklahoma on Friday night, but ultimately fell to the Sooners, 5-2. Coach George Husack had his team back in the win column on Sunday, posting victories against Troy, 5-2, and Lipscomb, 7-0. The Crimson Tide won all three doubles points and got a big win at the No. 1 spot in singles against Oklahoma as freshman Mazen Osama topped reigning ITA National Collegiate Player of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year Axel Alvarez Llamas, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(7). For his efforts, Mazen was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, his second weekly honor this season. He is now 6-2 in singles matches during the dual match season and holds a 4-1 mark at the top spot. Senior Becker O'Shaughnessey continues to lead our team in wins with seven thus far, including a perfect 6-0 record at No. 3 singles.
Women's Tennis
Coach Jenny Mainz's team remains ranked in the top 20 of the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Women's Team Rankings. The Crimson Tide has played four top-40 teams in five matches so far this season and has been led by freshman Andie Daniell, who was ranked 47th in the nation by the ITA earlier this week. Andie, of Douglasville, Ga., is 3-0 in dual matches this spring and has a 15-3 overall record in singles matches with five victories over nationally-ranked opponents. Junior Joanna Nena Savva, also in her first season competing at the NCAA Division I level, this week earned a national ranking for the first time in her career, coming in at 122nd. The team's next match will be on Monday, Feb. 15, in Charlottesville, Va., against No. 9 Virginia before returning home to face No. 25 Northwestern on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. CT.
Track & Field
Long jumper Quanesha Burks has been selected as one of 10 members of the February edition of the women's Watch List for the 2016 Bowerman Trophy. Quanesha was a semifinalist for the award last season following her NCAA title in the outdoor long jump, and was a member of the preseason Watch List released earlier this year. She has only competed in the long jump once so far in the 2016 indoor season, but she made it count, jumping 22 feet, 1/4 inch (6.71 meters) to break the school record that stood for nearly 30 years. That jump tied for the 10th-best mark in the event in women's collegiate history. Quanesha is one of only 13 collegiate women to jump at least 22 feet in the indoor long jump and is the only one to do so this season. She is currently ranked fourth in the world in the event. Coach Dan Waters' team competed in the New Mexico Classic & Multis last weekend, and the sprinters posted impressive finishes. Sophomore Olivia Fotopoulou advanced to the final of the women's 60 meters, finishing seventh. Junior Vanessa Clerveaux continued her solid season, qualifying for another final in the 60-meter hurdles, tying her personal best of 8.27 to place fifth. On the men's side, the 4x400 relay squad (featuring three freshmen) ran the second-fastest time among all collegiate teams in the event. Freshman Matthew Likely, freshman Isaac Trevino, junior Jacopo Lahbi and freshman Skyler Bowden finished with a time of 3:10.50. This weekend the Tide will have athletes competing in five different meets - the Iowa State Classic (Ames, Iowa); the Samford Elite Team Invite and Samford Open (Birmingham, Ala.); the Tyson Invitational (Fayetteville, Ark.); and the LSU High Performance Meet (Baton Rouge, La.). This is the last weekend of competition before returning to Fayetteville for the SEC Indoor Championships on Friday-Saturday, February 26-27. In this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Team Rankings, the men checked in at No. 15 while the women are No. 28.
