
Alabama’s Jalen Hurts a Finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

TYLER, Texas. – Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts is one of five finalists for the 2016 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, SPORTyler, Inc. announced on Thursday.
Hurts has already been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, becoming the first true freshman to win player of the year honors from the league since Herschel Walker in 1980. The Channelview, Texas, native has started 12 games for the Tide this season and is the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama since 1984. He is already the school's single-season quarterback rushing leader and is on pace to break the school season records for touchdown responsibility and total offense. Hurts has thrown for 2,592 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 841 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.
Joining Hurts as finalists for this year's award are quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes II (Texas Tech) and Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), running back D'Onta Forman (Texas) and wide receiver Dede Westbrook (Oklahoma).
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented to the top offensive player in NCAA Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. The award is limited to players who were born in the state of Texas, attended a Texas high school, or attended a Texas junior college or university.
The winner will be announced at the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet on January 11, 2017.
