CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Alabama Rowing closed its weekend and its fall racing season Sunday at the Head of the Hooch regatta, as all six Crimson Tide crews in the Women's Open 8+ finished in the top 20, including four top-10 finishes and a silver medal.
"This is the strongest finish we've had at the Head of the Hooch," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "It's the first time we've come away with three medals and the silver in the Open 8+ is the highest finish we've had at the event. It was a weekend with a lot of firsts. We did a really good job as a team and it was a great way to finish the fall."
Alabama's four top-10 finishes on Sunday brings the weekend's total to 10, including three silver medals over three events including Sunday's Open 8+ and Saturday's Novice 8+ and Championship 2x.
The Crimson Tide's silver medal crew in the Open 8+ was deadlocked in a very close race at the front of the pack with Clemson, ultimately finishing in 16:38.4, less than one second behind the Tigers' winning boat in 16:37.5. The two were the only crews in the field of 26 to finish under 17 minutes on the 5,000-meter course. A pair of Tide boats finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place just past the 17-minute mark, finishing in 17:12.0 and 17:28.8, respectively. Alabama's fourth crew crossed the line in 17:41.1, placing eighth to give the Tide a total of four in the top 10. Alabama's next-highest boat was a handful of seconds out of the top 10, ultimately finishing 11th in 17:55.8. An 18th-place finish in 18:32.5 rounded out the Tide's entries in the Open 8+.
This weekend bookends a successful fall season that started and ended in Chattanooga on the Tennessee River, giving the Tide a convenient gauge for measuring its improvement over the fall.
"Overall, our team performance was much more consistent this weekend than it was earlier this year at the Chattanooga Head Race," Davis said. "We picked up some medals in the first series earlier in October but this time around was a big step up from the first race. We were able to compete and get medals against some high-powered teams; we were certainly pleased to see that."
This concludes Alabama's fall racing slate, as the Crimson Tide will resume competition on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Eastern Michigan in Tuscaloosa.
"We need to make sure the team continues to work over the next few months to make sure they maintain a competitive level," Davis said. "It was great to have good conditions in Chattanooga this weekend and really challenge ourselves and have success in concluding our fall season."
