CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Alabama Rowing posted a strong team showing in Saturday action at the Head of the Hooch Regatta, earning six top-10 finishes including a pair of medal performances in the Novice 8+ and Championship 2x.
"Our overall team performance was our strongest Saturday performance at this regatta that we've ever had," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "Everyone placed in the top 20 and we had six top-10 finishes and two medal finishes. Our sixth-place finish in the Championship 8+ is our highest finish in that race at this event and we were less than a second away from fourth place."
The Crimson Tide opened Saturday racing with a competitive Championship 8+ race, as the top Alabama crew finished in a tight pack alongside Tennessee and Clemson where the Volunteers and Tigers tied in fourth place at 16:56.8 with the Tide trailing just behind in 16:57.4, good for a sixth-place finish. In the College & Club Novice 8+ race, both of Alabama's boats posted top-five finishes, including a fourth-place time of 19:02.4 and a silver medal time of 18:01.0.
The Tide followed that with another medal finish in the Championship 2x, with Jennifer Parker and Abby Marks teaming up to cross the line in 19:34.1, good for a second-place finish. Dani Mazer and Kylie Diffley finished around one minute later in 20:32.4 to place eighth. Alabama's sixth top-10 finish of the day came in the Women's Championship 4+, where the Tide finished fifth in 18:23.2.
"One of our focuses during the fall has been performing as a whole as a team," Davis said. "A lot of the rowers doubled up today and maintained a competitive edge even though they were racing in more than one race."
The team also benefitted from very favorable weather conditions on the Tennessee River, something that has proven elusive on the road over the past year away from Tuscaloosa.
"These were the best road conditions we've had in a long time," Davis said. "We've had miserable conditions over the last year traveling and we had great weather today. The weather looks good tomorrow and we're looking to finish the weekend with another strong performance."
Alabama will conclude its weekend at the Head of the Hooch tomorrow in the Women's Open 8+, set for a 12:06 p.m. CT start.
