LAST TIME OUT: ALABAMA SWEEPS SOUTH CAROLINA IN COLUMBIA
- Alabama 3, South Carolina 0 Alabama volleyball needed just three sets to dispatch South Carolina Friday night at the Carolina Volleyball Center, sweeping the Gamecocks by set scores of 28-26, 25-19 and 25-22. Alabama has now won six-straight matches over South Carolina stretching back to the 2013 season. The two teams went to extra points in the first set as Alabama came back to take the lead in the late stages of the frame before winning a comparatively decisive second set, 25-19. A late push by the Gamecocks in set three added some drama in the final points but Alabama ultimately persevered to win 25-22. Krystal Rivers led all players with 19 kills, her second-highest total in a three-set match this season, which puts her just seven shy of tying the Alabama career kills record with two matches remaining in the regular season. Rivers also earned four of the team's seven service aces, tying a season-high. Shannon Mikesky and Alexa Tomlak split setting duties, earning 18 and 12, respectively, while Abolanle Onipede went error-free with a .385 hitting percentage, her second-highest total in SEC play.
SOUTH CAROLINA MATCH SUPERLATIVES
- Friday's win marked the Alabama's sixth-straight over South Carolina, tied for the longest current winning streak for the Tide vs. an SEC opponent. Alabama has also won its past six matchups against Arkansas and Georgia. The second-longest current winning streak for Alabama comes against Saturday's opponent, LSU, as the Tide has won each of the last three meetings.
- Krystal Rivers scored four service aces in the match against the Gamecocks, her second-straight match with four aces and her fourth of the season. This brings her season total to 44, just four shy of her previous season high of 48 set in 2014. That year, she averaged 0.36 aces per set over 34 matches while she is averaging 0.40 per set over 29 matches so far this season. She has scored at least one ace in 22 of the 29 matches played.
- Shannon Mikesky started Friday's match at setter but split duties with Alexa Tomlak, as the pair finished with 18 and 12 assists, respectively. The two also finished in double figures in the Oct. 23 match at Ole Miss when Mikesky exited with an injury midway through and Tomlak finished the match. Prior to that, the last time two Alabama players both finished with double-digit assists in the same match was on Aug. 30, 2013 against Seton Hall when Sierra Wilson and Andrea McQuaid finished with 29 and 21, respectively.
