COLUMBIA, S.C. -The Alabama soccer team was defeated by the South Carolina Gamecocks by a final score of 3-0 on Sunday night at the Eugene E. Stone III Soccer Stadium. Sophie Groff, Savannah McCaskill and Raina Johnson scored the goals for South Carolina, while the Gamecocks defense limited the Tide to just two shots. With the loss, Alabama falls to 4-6-2, including a 1-3 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
"Like any season, I knew this season would be filled with highs and lows and tonight is certainly one of those lows," said head coach Wes Hart. "We were outplayed and outcoached by a superior team tonight. We are looking forward to getting back to Tuscaloosa and preparing for a very good Auburn team."
Alabama's first top-25 opponent of the 2015 season, South Carolina (10-1) carried a 2-0 lead into halftime and scored the game's final goal in the 55th minute. The Gamecocks outshot the Tide 17-2, improving to a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
The Gamecocks broke through at the 5:42 mark, as Raina Johnson received a cross from Sophie Groff and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. South Carolina's second goal came in the 15th minute, as Savannah McCaskill received the ball in the Tide's penalty box and slipped it past Rusk to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead.
Alabama's best scoring chance came off a free kick in the 48th minute. Junior Celia Jimenez hit the free kick low and hard, but her shot was ultimately blocked by the opposition.
South Carolina put the game out of reach in the 55th minute, as Groff collected her sixth goal of the season, heading home a corner from Kaleigh Kurtz to put the Gamecocks ahead, 3-0.
Alabama is now set to return home to square off against intrastate-rival Auburn on Thursday, Oct. 1. The match will mark Alabama's first nationally-televised contest of the season, as the game will air live on SEC Network.
