TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team won its second consecutive match on Sunday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex, defeating the visiting Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles by a final score of 1-0. Sophomore Lacey Clarida scored tonight's only goal in the 51st minute, heading home a corner kick from fellow sophomore Hailey Brohaugh. Tonight's victory improves the Tide's overall record to 3-3-2, while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-2-3.
"I'm really pleased to come out of the weekend with two wins," said head coach Wes Hart. "This was not an easy win for us. We expended a lot of energy in our win against LSU on Friday night. To be able to bounce back both physically and mentally says a lot about our team."
Alabama combined timely offense and relied on its stout defense to string together its first set of back-to-back victories on the season. The Tide outshot the Golden Eagles 22-6, including a 14-4 mark in the second half, and received its fourth shutout of the season from senior goalkeeper Emily Rusk.
"For the second-straight game we were able to generate some quality scoring opportunities," added Hart. "We did a great job of finding pockets of space and really controlled the tempo and dominated possession."
For the second consecutive night, Alabama converted a corner kick, as Hailey Brohaugh and Lacey Clarida teamed up for Clarida's first goal of the season in the 51st minute. Clarida logged a team-high four shots, including three shots on goal.
"Really happy to see Lacey get her first goal of the season," said Hart. "I know she's been putting a lot of pressure on herself. Hailey served a nice ball across and Lacey did a fantastic job of attacking it."
Alabama will continue its four-game homestand following this weekend's action, welcoming Kentucky and Jacksonville State to the Alabama Soccer Complex next weekend. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT and will be available on SECN+.
